My horse has a cereal intolerance, but she is lacking the sparkle that is needed for the competitions. We show jump and so need the extra umph and she is on pasture mix, hi-fi, suger beet, carrots, 5*superflex and propell plus. Today at a competition, she just wasn`t taking me into the fences and when I put my leg on, there wasn`t anything extra in the tank. When I tried her on the competition mix in January, she came out in little protein bumps. These were checked by a vet and she confirmed this.
Anyone else with a horse with cereal intolerance? What do you feed?
Thanks

Why don't you have a look at some of the well known feed manufacturers websites and check out the full range of their feeds as I'm sure most of them now produce specialist feeds for cereal intolerant horses.
You could also contact them as most of them have nutrionalists on hand to give advice on which may be the most suitable feed for your particular horse and the work he is doing.

I believe Allen & Page do a mix that is specifically designed for cereal intolerance. My horse is both allergic to cereals, plus linseed & soya oil & storage mites. He has just alfa-a in the summer, with alfa beet added in the winter. He also has a supplement called optimum by Dengie which helps him get the most out of his restricted diet. I don't compete to your level, but his energy levels are phenomenally high. He is turned out 24/7 & has ad lib hay.

I had an arab that I couldn't feed any mixed feeds, barley etc, neither could he take anything with molasses or sugar beet, he was allergic to carrots too

Not only did he come up in lumps but anything like that fried his brains, not good when you are hunting on mountains.

Finally, out of desperation, I tried him on the soaked oats and Alfa A oil. I did expect him to have the same reaction to them as he had to everything else. I was seriously sceptical as I really expected an already fizzy horse to get fizzier, but he didn't, he actually calmed down, put on condition and gave me two seasons hard hunting and always had plenty left in the tank.

I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it really worked for him.

Ed is fed Allen & page Intollerence mix with Baileys Outshine
The intollerence mix gives him all the mins and vits he needs and the outshine gives him the energy he needs without fizzing him up.
Works a treat for him.

Can you find out which cereal it is your horse is allergic too?

For many it is barley and so you will need to avoid any of the slow release mixes/nuts as they are mostly based on barley.

Im fairly lucky with Gen as although he has a Barley/Garlic/Sugarbeet and Alfalfa intolerance he does very well and has lots of energy on cheap pony nuts and Readigrass.

Could you try giving her something like Red Cell for a while?

she has been on the propel plus since last summer.

She was on Re-leve as it doesn`t have cereals and is supposed to be sufficient for competition, so I think that I am gonna go back onto that and add oil for a while and see what happens. I suppose that I am a bit stuck for using oats and stuff.

my mare has an intolerance to wheat, but trying to find a feed that doesnt have wheat in (in any form) is a nightmare. I eventually got in touch with simple systems. have you thought about those? http://www.simplesystem.co.uk/simpleproducts.asp

Simple Systems produce fibre based feeds for everything from a Shetland through to Racehorses so well worth having a chat with them. I went to see their Lecture a few years ago - once seen never forgotten! And certainly changed how I felt about feeding horses that's for sure... One of the directors (Jane Van Lennep or similar) does endurance etc and is very experienced in horse nutrition full stop.
