This is 100% definately a wind tangle. There is absolutey no way anyone could have got into the field. It is amazingly plaited, and was a sod to get out!

Great picture - and thank you for posting it. Let's hope it settles some of the hysterics who have been so worried. Losing a horse is a terrible thing, and it's dreadful, to my mind, that so many people have been so upset by the ravings of a few.

My two long maned and excessively long tailed ponies both get those, especially in the autumn when they are heavily decorated with burdock heads.

My traditional gets wind tangles like that. I spray a lot of mane and tail on and then slowly pull them apart with my fingers. He can get one like that over night.

Wish I'd taken a picture of Piper's mane - he had 6 or 7 of those, and even more impressive that that - they took up pretty much the whole mane. And they do appear overnight! I brushed out his mane the afternoon before - next morning there was three, which I just left, and by the day after they were back in full force. It seems to depend on how long and fine the mane is.

Bet that was fun to get out!! My welshie used to get those when her mane was left long, thankfully not that bad though!!

I've started my traditional Spring untangling sessions, with lots of Cowboy Magic and patience. It may be a bit early, but I can't bear them any more. Often they look like your photos, sort of scruffy plaits. There is near-hysteria near me at the moment because someone thought their horses had been marked to be stolen in this way. I've really got my doubts to be honest, and feel sorry for the owner as I think this is really worrying some people.
I think if someone wants to steal a horse they will mark the location in sat nav, and if they don't go themselves, will probably tell the thieves what colour it is.

Freezemarking would be an idea if anyone is worried maybe?
