As title really - I have an old mare who just cannot manage hay/hayledge any more and is happy to eat chopped hay, hence the need for a chaff cutter. I have managed to source some lovely chaff locally which is unmollassed and is greAt but it's costing a small fortune :( I've been onthe lookout for a chaff cutter but can only find ones that are miles away, I'm in north shropshire/staffs/chesire border. Any help greatfully received :)

We use a garden shredder which works beautifully, we tried this because we couldn't find a proper chaff cutter. We have also modified the cutter on it. You need the cutting blade to be kept very sharp and make the gap smaller where the blade actually does the cutting. Don't be too greedy when you push the hay through and hey presto, excellent chaff.

Sheddy00 can you explain your method a bit more, I am intrigued.

I've got a redundant one which is rigged up via belt to a stationary engine. I used to knock out sacks of chaff in a short time. The only thing is I'm in Suffolk so no use to you.

We placed an ad in our local shop saying "Chaff cutter wanted" and got a reply after a couple of weeks, but we do live in a very rural area.
They are also quite often at agricultural dispersal sales.
Try on line I believe they are still made in India and the Armish in the USA make them. You could buy one thert

I too have used a garden shredder with good results. I put everything through twice. I mixed straw and hay for my very good doer.
