Hello everybody.

Semi crisis happening. I currently have my wee lad on Halley's Greengold, Purabeet & Top Spec Leisure, he's thriving on it, brilliant condition and not too fizzy, which he can be prone to. He's a good doer, but is getting a decent amount of hard feed at the mo as he's in the fat boys field, not too much grass and is in medium/competative work.

However, I am thoroughly fed up with the varying quality of the greengold. the quality is alway a bit of a hit or miss, but the last 2 bags I had were lovely light fluffly bags and the third I opened yesterday was awful to say the least. looks like its been swept from the barn floor and doesn't even smell nice. I am going back with it today, but am reluctant to get another because it does vary so much and it seems like another bad 'batch' is around as others on the yard don't seem much better. There are stones in it and everything. God knows if they even have any quality control!!

can anyone recommend a similar non molassed, chaff style feed to use instead? The simple system luciestalks is about the closest thing I have seen, but I am not paying £9 for a bag of chaff

anyone know anything about equillibrium, there are a few on our yard that recommend I use that. It has a little molasses and a few other bits and pieces, but they reckon I could feed less of it and half his top spec ration, which would balance out the cost as well.

Any recommendations would be most welcome as I have now comletely run out of feed and need to go to the store this lunchtime.

Thanks

ive always used a dengie chaff like hi-fi or alfa a. cannot fault them and i think its quite good value for money.

I use equilibrium and its fantastic stuff. you probably wouldn't need the top spec at all, as far as i know equilibrium is complete - i don't add anything to it.

Does he really need a chaff? I find most chaffs are very expensive for what they are! I presume the Greengold is alfafa-based? Beet and alfafa are a great combination for working horses - you could get some alfafa pellets and soak them with the Purabeet or you could swap the beet and alfafa for AlfaBeet which combines the two ingredients in one feed. Dengie alfafa pellets and AlfaBeet don't contain any molasses.

Edited to add, that I think combining fibre foods such as alfafa and beet with a balancer or vit/min supplement is a more flexible way to feed than a complete feed, especially for good doers. The balancer or supplement ensures they get their vit/mins, and you can vary the amount of alfafa/beet according to whether they are gaining or losing weight.

I like Dengie, and use the good doer cos it has added vits and mins for those on restricted grazing so no supplements needed to top that up. Don't like the equilibrium products...they seem to blow horses heads watching others that use it on yard, also guidelines are pretty subjective...what some consider medium level work, others would say is light.

thanks guys - TGM, Greengold is from the lucerne crop. Our Simple system dealer does similar lucerne and AA products to what you describe, but she marks them up in price ridiculously. The only stuff I'll get from her is purabeet and once she sticks the price of that up, then I'll use speedibeet. Are there any brands or specific products you have in mind apart from SS? I do like using seperate fibre/balancer & beet, so I can ration what he gets acording to his weight/energy etc. that's part of what was putting me off winergy.

Mariatoo/Alicep - have been looking at the dengie, the hifi light looks to have only low levels of molasses extract, so that might well be an option. Does anyone know how lucerne/alfalfa differ and how they compare to cereal straw?

Grrr I hate messing about with my feeds. Am I thinking about it too much?

I know what you mean...whenever I follow "guidance" it usually ends up with and ever expanding waistline on the pony, so I tend to stick with what works for her as opposed to what is "recommended". However, I do add pasture mix when the work levels go up, by the hand full (mine are small). My trainer is amazed becuae she expected her to be over excitable...what can I say...we're both a bit too laid back?
