As the title I suppose what's the difference between feeding say Hi Fi light at and Mollichaff Original? Just looking at prices really Mollichaff works out a bit cheaper. Or are they really completely different things?

Jen1 - you really need to read the details either on the bag or off the company's information sheets to get the full composition ie protein content, oil, calories, vits and mins etc etc etc. Only then can you make a true comparison. Like you, I've been hunting about, trying to find something to bulk out my boy's Veteran Chaff which he adores and which gives him a coat so shiny you can see your face in it. But I thought it was too high in calories as he's a good doer and he ought to be looking a bit thinner coming out of winter. I hate Hi Fi Lite coz to me it looks and smells about as appetising as shredded front door mats and I've known plenty of horses that refuse to eat it. But I felt maybe I ought to do a partial replace of some of Sunny's Veteran Chaff with Hi Fi Lite. That is, until I looked at the contents and energy levels! Veteran Chaff is actually lower in sugars than Hi Fi Lite but a little higher in oils. But the antioxidants and other trace elements are very similar. So Sunny keeps his Veteram Chaff and I just cut down a bit! It's really worth doing your homework and phoning the feed companies either for advice or for leaflets on their products.

Most standard chaffs like Mollichop are made from Oat or wheat Straw....hi-fi light also contains alfalfa as well as cereal straw...it is also low in sugar (about 5%)...so it can also be fed as a hay replacer....Mollichop and the like, tend to be quite mollassed and contain alot more sugar...ie: mollichop is about 20% sugar...applechaff is about 17% etc etc...

thats the main differences really...
Hi fi lite is approved by the laminitics trust too so safe for them..

Ahhhh so I see!!

Actually got to the yard tonight and someone had a bag of Mollichaff so I sneaked a look at the bag and Molasses were on there which I don't want at the moment. My horse is actually on box rest and I am giving HI-Fi Light, not so worried re laminitis from grass, but more as a feed that he can have lot of. He can then have several smaller feeds a day and to keep him munching a bit longer. Normally he is a good doer and can be a handful to ride so I don't want to encourage any 'bad' behaviour whilst stabled!

Thank you!!
