Sorry if this sounds like a seriously dumb question, but will chalk pastels be alright to use on a horses legs?

Ali got a few cuts after his fit when we were trying to load him a while after we bought him, and the hair is in the middle of growing back but it doesn't look quite "right" yet. As Ali's legs have dapples or are black in places, is it ok to use chalk pastels? I find that it's a lot easier to mix the white and black chalks to get a greyish colour that blends in with his legs, as plain white chalk looks a bit out of place in some areas. Thanks in advance

We usually use talcon(sp) powder well I never did use anything it was only when I went with yard owner she would start throwiing anything on my horse as she was my groom at the shows lol. I know a lot of people that use chalk though.

CM - I think you are taking it all a bit too seriously, your horse isn't going to do well a county level showing as a hunter, because he is not the right type!!

Chill out!! Make him look smart and use it as an experience.

Chalk is good to use although I have only ever used it on shires which have a considrible amount more feathers than your lad but it is still worth a try!

I just want to look presentable FFS! Yes, I am doing it all for experience, I couldn't give a damn if I come last but at least I want to look half decent! He looks finer in photos than he actually is, he'd be more a riding horse than ridden hunter, but at this show there is only ridden hunters, NOT split into LW, MW, or HW, just put altogether. As I have stated on many occassions in various posts, county level showing here is COMPLETELY different to the UK...

I have used chalk on my boy before
I find it works best to mix it with a drop of water to make it into a paste, put it on then bandgae it up overnight. Next morning take off bandage brush off excess then re-bandage and only take off just before you go in the ring - keeps everything nice and clean.

Hope that helps

I hope it goes ahead, still waiting to hear about Tatts! Just think after all that cleaning we will be in te ring about 2 seconds and there will be mud everywhere, you just cant win

I use chalk on my lot. you can also get black and white makeup from supreme and mix then to the right color as well.

Anyway dont let people put you off. your horse is a star to you and you have every right to be at that show just like everyone else.

I wouldnt worry too much about it either as i said in your last post i won a county show with crappy turnout and the horse had a chunk out of his neck. They can suprise you as we only went for the experiance of it as horsey was a baby.

Thank you everyone

I'd say the Ossory show will go ahead, they were already putting up a lot of fencing for the different rings Saturday, and last year from what I remember it was p*ssing rain when it was on! I wouldn't think Tattersalls would cancel as there are far too many qualifiers and classes. Good luck at Tattersalls!
