Not really sure where I stand with this or i might be opening up a can of worms... so wise words would be welcome!

There are a few exclusions on my girl's insurance policy, osteoarthritis as she had a bone spur on her coffin joint diagnosed in 2012, sarcoids as vet noted a lump that 'may or may not be a sarcoid... let me know if it changes (it didn't; however ironically two years later a sarcoid did develop in a different site which required treatment)' early 2012 as a result of seeing these notes, but the one I'm annoyed about is anything relating to her DDFT.

A couple of years ago, she was slightly lame. With her having previous with her coffin joint, I called the vet. Flexion tests were done, she was 1/10 lame. Lunged on a surface, again nothing to note, and slightly off on a hard surface. Nothing found. Buted and box rested, no improvement. Vet came back out again and we start discussing the need to x-ray again. Vet came without the plates and then got emergency call so couldn't. Different vet from same practice then came out. Discussion was that if it was the same condition, it wouldn't be covered as osteoarthritis and relating bone conditions now excluded. That wasn't unexpected for me, I just wanted to know what the underlying cause was - if I had to pay then so be it.

Problem was, second vet was quite newly qualified and suggested to start a claim form just in case they would cover anything. I printed one off and passed it on to him. Next visit he tells me he has submitted the form and said that he tried to state the cause for lameness was unknown. They wouldn't accept that so he put down it was suspected DDFT. The claim didn't go through - she came sound again - and she almost certainly did not have damage to her DDFT.

However, I feel stuck. At the time, the vet decided this without my say so but as there was no treatment needed and therefore no claim for the insurance company to process I thought nothing of it. Subsequently, I realised they will take this as vets notes. Is there any point me now disputing this? I feel vet was trying to help but I don't want to cause them any trouble and I'm also concerned it may look like I have been a part of this. But she is now ont covered for something that she has never had an issue with and sods law is at some point I may need to claim and unless I can get this exclusion removed that's not going to happen.

Should I suck it up, as I didn't think to challenge this as the time, or should I say something? I'm no longer with said vet practice due to a catalogue of misdiagnosis with my horse.

Phone the insurance company and say you’d like to discuss having an exclusion lifted. I think you’ll probably need to fill a form in and their assessors will decide. I had one lifted for my mare’s front leg after she had some inconclusive investigations and then went sound for a year post initial claim.

I wouldn't get too cross with the vet, if you do ever have an issue with the DDFT and wanted to claim then they would have had a look back through the history and see an unknown lameness and link it anyway. If this was after 12 months they would likely refuse the claim...

At least with it being put down as something it is officially recognised so you can ask to have it lifted after a year.

Thanks both, I had tried this with the sarcoid issue previously however they were adamant they would not remove, but this was at the same time she was having liverpool cream treatment so don't blame them really.

Get an up to date exam and vet report from your new practice with specific reference to the DDFT. If the vet can say the horse has not been lame for x years and there is no evidence of DDFT injury you should have an excellent chance of getting the exclusion lifted.

At least, that's how we do it at my place. Though we do seem to be very different to British insurance companies.
