Maybe a gentle (warm water) hand wash instead and use a natural bar soap not detergent or washing powders as these remove the oils from the leather.
The bar soap usually has tallowate in it (tallow-beef fat) which will help retain oils within the chamois.
Rinse in warm clean water and let it dry naturally.
