Any calming product is banned in FEI competition! In theory that is !!!!
The rules state that you cannot administer any substance that may alter the going or temperament of the horse!

thats US and not current though, was fairly sure it had changed from being banned to being not reccomended ie use at your own peril (but in reality you would need to feed a LOT to get a positive result for the active ingredient)???????

Yeah, most of the info I found was 2008-2009ish and said it was banned, but couldn't see it on the current list.

Might be worth an email to BD, that way, if you are tested and pulled up - you've covered your back? I did also read that you'd need barrow loads to test positive!

No idea but I'd personally not risk it. I'd be mortified if I had a horse test positive for a banned substance. No matter how much you told people you had no idea, no-one would believe you! (people make their own conclusions) I don't think its worth the risk.

I don't compete anywhere near the level you do PS, but when I did compete at a top level we were paranoid and all buckets clearly marked to make sure that nothing crossed over should anything be on any meds for whatever reason.

i took some once, it's supposed to help with sleep, never again, i'm not saying it would have the same effect on everyone but the next day i felt very spaced out, dozy and almost depressed, i certainly would not give it to a jumping horse for example, but then i don't know if it works the same way with horses.

As stated before it is the intention of use - same with lavender, it is not banned per se but the intention is - and the same with all calmers, magnesium and herb based!

in that case, what about things like the equifeast range which market on improving brain function but also market as being competition legal??

Because marketing people playt with words as there is nothing that will show up on test but it is still illegal to use it for that purpose! as in the FEI rules it is expressly forbidden to administer any product that will alter the temperament or way of going of a horse. Some companies have changed their wording others havent but none are strictly competition legal!!!
The only time you are likely to be caught out is if you are seen administering the product at a competition!

Sorry but it's not as simple as that. Most calmers are magnesium based, and magnesium is a mineral - feeding it isn't necessarily going to alter the temperament of the horse, rather a deficiency can cause the horse to not perform as well. Similarly all the ingredients in the Equifeast product are vitamins, minerals and amino acids that should be present in the horse's diet anyway. It's about ensuring optimum nutrition to get the best out of your horse!

The FEI/BEF look at as to why you are feeding said substance in these cases - if you are feeding as a calmer then it's not OK but if you are feeding to account for a lacking in the diet then it's fine - it's about intent!

Of course its not simple! However any body administering a calmer tube at a competition cannot really say they are rectifying a feed issue can they!!! That should have been done at home ages ago through simple feeding management.Dont get me going on magnesium deficiency as in reality very few horses have a deficiency but the magnesium in calmers does have some effect on them but not because they were deficient in the first place but because they cannot mobilise it when stressed! In some of these horses the more magnesium you feed the more symptoms you get as the over supply in the animals reduces its ability to use it .It is very complicated. This is why some riders say that the calmer actually made the horse worse.
