I tried this hat on yesterday at the RDS (Ireland's Olympia horse show :)) and it's reduced from €135 to €99 :D. I'm a 7 1/8 in my current harry hall hat so we tried the 58 in Champion but I felt it was a bit big so then tried the 57. The 57 was a bit pinchy but the helmet seems to have a lot of foam padding inside it so was thinking it I bought the smaller size it would just mould to my head?

Has anybody had this problem? How did you find the padding after a few wears?

We use these. Yes the padding does mold to a certain extent - but different makes of hat suit different head shapes. If you don't have a "Champion" type shaped head nothing is going to make it different!

How do I know if it's my headshape that's wrong for the helmet or the sizing? I don't think I've ever been properly fitted and have never seen professional fitters in any of my tack shops.

They do do things apart from fit hats while they're there ;)

The only way to tell is to get one properly, professionally fitted. Go into your local shops and ask to have one fitted - if they haven't got anyone working there who can't fit the hats they sell, I wouldn't bother with them, tbh. If you're buying a new make or even just have any doubts about how a hat fits, get it fitted. Nobody on a forum can really help you with this at the end of the day and if you're going to bother wearing a hat (quite right, too :D) and shelling out for it, give it the best chance you can to actually do its job properly.

Mine was quite tight when I first bought it but it seems to have moulded a bit and can feel slightly loose at times. I'd go for the tighter one as long as the head shape is ok as they definitely give a bit after a couple of months use (riding every day).
