Just recieved some x-rays of my mare that were done last year. Vet said she has bone spavins. Had all the treatments etc, been sound then not sound. So decided to give her this winter off as field rest.

Asked for copies of every x-ray she has had done to show my friend who does x-rays for a living, including equine x-rays. Well she looked at them today and said get a second opinion asap she said she found a few spavins. But in others her joints look actually exceptionally good with no degeneration and very little changes. There are some sharp edeges and lips which will cause some pain but I would have thought not the amount which would cause you the problems that you have experienced. It also looks like she had an OCD very high up in her hock possibly as a baby.

She is showing the x-rays to her vets to reconfirm what she thinks. Now i have claimed all this on insurance so far £4k have £1k left, but if i get second opinion am i going to have issues with insurance if the vets have told be wrong condition?

Whats the best move to go for now, second opinion or leave it as shes turned away now for winter. Shes 9 years old now so has plenty of life left in her.

I'm pretty sure once they have paid out then they have paid and settled the claim. I can't see your vets giving the cheque back!!!
They wouldn't ask for the money back BUT if they have paid out and closed the claim they may have excluded that part of your horse so wouldn't pay out again.
Best having a chat with them and telling them that you want a second opinion and if your policy would cover this.
If they say no then you have to decide if you can afford to go ahead without insurance if they say yes then ask them how much you have left in your policy.
Just remember that even if you go for a second opinion then they could say the same as the original vet.
If your not happy with the service from the original vets you could write a letter to the practice and also send a copy to the Veterinary Ombudsmen...I'll dig out the address.

When my horse last year was diagnosed with Laminitis and after the shockingly bad service i received from a very large practice in Nantwich i sort a second opinion from another large practice. It wasn't good news and they put my horse down that night...even after Nantwich told me to give him another couple of weeks!!!...Anyway...
My insurance paid both practices what they were due.
