Poppy's behaviour has changed over the past week, for the worse. She has gone from a well behaved, albeit a tad spooky mare to something not very nice.

In the field she comes when she is called, sometimes I give her a treat, not always. Whereas before she would stay with me and allow me to check her over, and more often than not groom her untethered for up to an hour, now she swings her backside at me and will turn away from me. She wont allow me to touch her, if I do she jumps and moves off.

Tied up she is ok, and does allow me to catch her.

If I go to see her in the field she eyes me up. She is not the affectionate mare she was.

Could this be down to:

New grass growth following the recent rain. She is in a four acre field along with 15 lambs and ewes and now 5 cows and calves as I was worried the grass was going to get too much.

She could be in season although nothing visible.

She could be about to foal - before I owned her she ran with a stallion for two weeks at the end of August, dates not known exactly.

Boredom; as she hasn't done much as I have treated her as being in foal.

This behaviour has been going on for about a week and is to be honest quite upsetting. I do have someone lined up to reschool her and I think this needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Thank you for reading!

IMO, serious lack of basic education. What was her previous story? The fact that she may be in foal and lacking the basics isnt good news. Please have her visited by a vet and try to keep her 'in touch' with yourself. Make time to groom her, feed her by hand, touch her all over. We only get out, what we have put in!
