....and it feels like a weight has been lifted!!

Ive had horses for nearly 40 years and have been lucky enough to have had transport all that time, so have always been out and about from a young age. Up until around a year ago I was still going out regularly, 2 to 3 times a month plus lessons etc. I just seem to have lost the drive for it now. I did jump but havnt since last year and have mainly done dressage. My horse is fit enough but I'm no longer prepared to put the necessary schooling in so we can get good scores. My horse is 17 this year and I'd like to keep him fit and sound for as long as possible and I just feel schooling for comps isn't going to help. I decided to pretty much cut out competing and just do fun clinics, which we have a few planned. I cannot describe how I feel a weight has been lifted!! I already feel that I'm enjoying my horse more having taken the pressure right off. It's very strange. I will still do a few music classes as I really enjoy that but I won't be expecting my scores to improve!!

I am a little like you in that have backed off of dressage as horse is older - doing some schooling a bit like doing Pilates for the older person but not doing the level of schooling he would need to be competitive at the level he had got to. Am still showing with the aim of reaching some finals but definitely taken the pressure off. I fancy trying some working equitation as well for something different. Enjoy your change of direction.

We've got a working equitation clinic coming up, really looking forward to it!! I'm like you, just doing the essentials in schooling to keep supple. Good luck with the showing!
