George tends to get an intermittant cough in the spring and autumn :( but this spring its been worse than usual, possibly because of the warm weather and rape seed near by. So I am thinking about changing his bedding from straw, it will probably have to be to shavings as the yard only does straw or shavings.

He is in a barn of 5 horses that is well ventilated and he is one stable from the door, there are bars between the stables and the horse one side is on shavings, but the horse the other side is on straw - does this mean changing George to shavings would be pointless?

Are shavings really a lot better than straw, or are they dusty as well?

George has his hay rationed and spread out into smaller chunks in the evenings (he is muzzled during the day when out) or he would be the size of a horsebox  but I am always reassured that he has his bed to nibble on if he gets bored/hungry and as it is v nice straw this has never bothered me. But how will he cope if he's got nothing left to eat/do?

Any help / advice much appreciated :)

If you are worried about him being bored, how about a lick that hangs from the ceiling or one of those balls that you put a little bit of food in for them to try and get out?

Mine are on shavings, and I've had no problem with dust. Both of them have to have their hay steamed, so they'd show it if it caused a problem. Don't know what effect the straw next door would have though.
