does anyone else find themselves hanging the bit their horse is in fairly frequently?

id actually love to stick to one thing but for eg.My horse was going nicely in a mullen mouth loosering snaffle, then after about 6 weeks began to set against it and evade, running through my hand. I switched to a loosering single jointed and instantly he was back working nicely, submitting, light and responsive and downward transitions were more balanced again. 6 weeks or so has passed and the same thing is happening, he is starting to run through my hand when i ask for a downward transition and also evade and poke his nose. Last night i popped a hang cheek version on and he was back to being good again! Is he just a horse who needs a regular change do you think? Does anyone else have a horse like this... or would you work through it when he starts being bratty and disobedient? Saddle, teeth etc all recently done :)

I also find the same for XC, pop him in one bit and he is fab... use it for a few weeks and its like he learns how to evade it and the brakes fail again and I have to switch to something else.At the mo its between kimblewick, loopring with drop noseband and dutch gag with grakle.

Personally, I'd alway prefer to have one bit for everything - mainly because I'm lazy and can't be bothered switching them.

I felt C strong in the french link hanging cheek especially when hacking or jumping but since changing to the loose ring revolver that's pretty much stopped and I've even been able to take off his flash too and I still feel I have plenty of control.

If he needs a new bit then I'll consider it but it's settled just now.

Oh me too, im lazy and id much prefer him to settle in one. Im just wonder tho if some horses are just like this?

I have a mare who has to get her XC bit changed after every couple of runs or so as she soon learns how to evade it. She goes between a myler with a curb/grackle and a running gag/grackle. Same goes for her flatwork!
I have different bridles as I hate changing bits! She is a 14 yr old intermediate eventer and she will never go in one bit. I bought her from a pro and they said that that is just the way she is.

It is quite common, but usually only in horses that tend to be a bit strong. My ex steeple chaser was like that as he'd had his mouth ruined before I got him. I had to school him in a gag and compete him in a hanging cheek. We have another horse on the yard that had her mouth ruined by training in draw reins. She needs a pelham most of the time but can be schooled in a snaffle for a day or s before she notices and takes advantage. My other horses though have always been permanently in a snaffle (the sprenger conrad dressage bradoon). Nothing wrong with changing bits regularly if you have a horse that takes advantage.
