we have bought a newer chassis for my tristar lorry body and will be swapping it over when the current truck is out of plate next month.
The V5 that arrived for the new one has it down as an HGV box van.
My horsebox V5 lists it as a livestock carrier, and private HGV.

What's the process to change it? aware that DVLA are having delays with just about everything at the moment so is this something to crack on with urgently or can it wait? Tax seems to be the same for both vehicles under current details.

The following is probably not helpful, but that’s not stopped me in the past :p. I think your chassis swap was a home job so it might not be that easy to have it changed in the V5. DVLA will want an engineers report on headed paper from the mechanic who did the conversion and when you tell them it was a home/DIY job their tiny heads will explode .

We’ve been trying to get details amended on some V5’s (engine number and fuel type for Golf, and engine number for T4) for 6 years and are no further forward than when we started. Apparently the people working there can’t conceptualise people working on their own vehicles

My husband is putting a classic car (of some sort - yawn) onto a Mazda sports car chassis, I got the job of emailing the DVLA to ask about what we had to do ( and whether this Frankenstein of a car would still be tax exempt) and they were super helpful. they haven't (yet) asked for anything like an engineers report of anything, just answered the questions I asked and said let them know when it was ready to go on the road

I cant help, but my 3.5 box is listed as a box van.
It was reg as a drop side truck when I brought it at nearly 4 yrs old, then sent it to reputable box maker for coachbuilding.
DVLA refused to make it a livestock carrier and insisted it was a box van, despite coach builder and I doing everything we could.
Idiots.....

We've been through the mill in the past as DH used to build custom motorbikes, they got the right hump about x make frame with Y make engine, let alone the colours, we used to drive our local inspector nuts!

Good luck MP.

thanks all! given the tax is the same i am wondering whether to just change it to private HGV (assume that's important for some reason?!) and leave the rest!!

Won't you have to change the chassis number on the log book? I don't think it's a major issue if it doesn't change the weight the truck can carry, but I think it is important if you had an accident, and the truck isn't as described on the log book (even down to something as trivial as the colour of the bodywork), it can invalidate your insurance.

Oof, is your husband planning to go through the IVA process?

If he doesn’t have enough points (https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles ) to use the original plate it’ll have to go through IVA to get a Q plate and that’s not far off impossible these days. The points will also count towards if it’ll still be over the 40 year tax/mot limit (it won’t be if you’re using a chassis newer than the original vehicle).

The generally accepted way of doing things is to not tell the DVLA anything but to insure vehicles like this on a fully modified policy with everything declared. I’m not necessarily advocating that he does this, but it’s something to be aware of.

If you insure the vehicle with the chassis change as a declared modification then there’s no insurance issue.

Just a mechanic who’s happy to write up a report on headed paper should do ;). I’m assuming you’re intending to use the V5 for the newer truck that’s having the body swapped on to it so there’s nothing to change with regard to chassis or engine numbers.

Sorry, I can't remember, (the whole thing bores me rigid) although I don't *think* he has to have a Q plate... By the time he finishes the thing, the rules will probably have changed anyway, it's taking forever!
We did once retain a number plate, and if you don't do everything through the DVLA with that, you have endless insurance renewal issues as it keeps coming up as the wrong vehicle on their systems, which is all very tedious. As most motoring matters are...My husband says I'd uninvent the wheel, if I could!

I did this. I went from a 82 cargo to a 98 iveco. Was a wooden body and did not appreciate the move as it bade it looser but a metal body different

All I did is phoned the DVLA and registered the new chassie and they sent back confirmation that I could change the plates over. . Was quite easy then.
