Is there a need? when you get a rescue to change it's name? did you and why?
I can understand when the name is full on ******, but when it's a nice normal name, whats the issue?

I never knew the name of the majority of mine so I had to name them obviously:p but for the ones that came to me with an established name.

My rotti was called regan= (she was 2yrs) old, so why change it:confused:
My shepherd was called = Cara she was also around 2yrs old, again, no need to change it.
My akita was also called cara and I had a cara so obs had to change it (this obs has to be done):p

I did change (pointer) Bullet (horrid name) to bud/buddy but thats very similar.

Anyway I am rambling and have a reason for it:p

Did you change an older/rescue/second hand dogs name? and why?

I've only had one dog that already had a name and that's Sage. We did think about changing it because we weren't too sure we liked it. We couldn't think of anything we liked better that sounded similar so we stuck with Sag. However it gets changed to Sags, Sagey, SagBags and Oy stupid dog... SHUT UP!!

Changed both of mine and wouldn't hesitate to change another - a new name for a new start. :)

Started the trend with Dax because her name was a very clichéd husky name and a bit chavvy (Meika); I prefer short, snappy, not-girly names. Continued with Ricoh because his name, though short, was strangely difficult to pronounce and I also thought 'chav' :o (Kian).

I actually have a list of names in my head for future dogs, next one will be either Rohan or Chinook, regardless of sex. :p

I used to change their names to my whisky theme - Jura, Talisker, Macallan, Port Ellen - then I just couldnt be bothered any more :p

Islay was Lady when I got her, which personally I cant stand, so I would have changed hers regardless.

But hell, if I can have a dog called Hoover, anything goes :D

I exactly:p I can see you changing lady to another name (every other dog) at one time was called it:p but if they have a perfectly good name, and yes some will argue on what is a good name:rolleyes: but lady is kinda "same oldey" but you have kept amy, flick, hoover, all perfectly good names, hoover is odd but its certainly unique and kinda cool:) you could have changed to Lugar, would have sounded the same:p

I like meika, but it is kinda of a "given" husky name, like nukka/mishka for a mal:rolleyes::p
I totally understand why you did not wanna sound like you where a "westlife "fan for years to come with a chavvy kian name for a dog:D:D

Maybe I am just a miserable cow:o

I salute you:p, sage is a perfectly good and no need to change name:)

We changed one of our old rescue dogs names from Jemma to Jet. Didn't like the name and the poor dog cowered when anyone called her Jemma :o

We've never changed the name of a dog that came to us however the GSD that Dad brought home who had been beaten up by her family something terrible (I've told the story before) was called Sheba when she came (all GSD's were called Sheba in the 80's ;)) but actually we should have changed her name because very often, as soon as you called out Sheba - she would hightail it away as fast as she could (expecting another beating I guess

Over the years she got better and better but even at the end, very ocassionally out on a walk, if you called her she would bolt back to the car - poor dog :(

Definitely should have changed her name in hindsight.

All 4 of my rescue Dobes have kept their original names Leo,Fred,Darcy & Diesel. I never liked the name Fred Or Diesel but being unimaginative couldnt think of a substitute name which sounded like the original and suited the dog.

I am glad I kept their names as they seemed to grow into them.:)

Well, I am guilty! I got my rescue two weeks ago and I changed her name straight away! She's now called Molly but she was called Tiny. I just didn't like that name - well, it's not a name it's a size! Plus, she's neither small or large so it was a stupid name! Lol. She's under 1 year old and she seems happy enough being called molly.

Our other dogs we've left as they were though in the main. Our last rescue was called Bootsie - we changed that to Boots. Couldn't change her name though really as we already had a Sox so it was very apt she was called Boots. Destined to come to us I reckon!

YES they fecking well have...I will remove it b4 that happens:rolleyes::p and to what.....summit special.........NO:mad: Tess:rolleyes: I mean come on!

Of course they can change them....if I say so:rolleyes:

So what hideous name had YOU given the poor pooch?

Recon you could change Ozie's name to 'NO' with no hassle at all :)

I changed the names of two of my rescue cats......"Odo" (from Wood Green Animal Shelter), at the age of two in 1998 became Oliver ( and 2011, he's FAB!) and 2002, Gizmo, RSPCA rescue cat became Millie (ditto - FAB cat - can't believe she's now nine!).

Current pup is the first I've changed, he was young enough for it not to matter and it sounds pretty close to the original.
Worst was a dog we bred called Zep getting turned into 'Jewel' :o

Only name weve ever changed was when i was growing up we had a dobe called Billy when we got the next at 12 weeks he was called Ben. My dad refused to keep it as it would have been Bill and Ben the Dobermen!!!:D:D I thought it was great. It was changed to Bart as his KC registered name was Barty Frumpkin!!! It actually really suited him perfectly!!!:)

That reminds me of a story my sister told me about when her youngest daughter was a school with twin boys called William & Benjamin, those boys must have been so teased.:D

When we got our pup he was 7 weeks and the woman we bought him off was calling him Billy. We changed it to shadow and then to Scout. But he doesn't actually respond to it. He responds to Puppy and Dog. So when we walk him in the park and shout Dog he comes back. People also look at us like we are crazy. My mum also calls him "you little black *******" when he is about to be told off :P

Well ... we changed or at least added to one of the three:

Willie: Willie was a stray and the shelter named him Steamboat. We couldn't see calling that all the time and he'd only had it a couple of weeks anyway so we added Willie and that is mainly what he goes by although he will also respond to Steamboat or Steamy as well. His vet records are in the name Steamboat Willie which we find hysterical for a mutt.

Bella: Bella's name had been changed by the rescue group we got her from and we kept it. She was originally from a shelter down south and her papers from there say "Mrs Beagle" ().

Dakota: This was the name his owners - who had him from a pup - surrendered him to the rescue group with and we kept it.

My only rescue didnt have a name, I named her on the way home in the car, speaking in a soothing voice to her about what she would like to be called (she was totally trashed and upset at being in a car) by the time I got her back she was Tilly....she was a foster so intended for her to have a name that the next owner wouldnt mind too much in the hope they would keep it. Done this with other nameless doggies as well, nice simple unoffensive names like Charlie, Millie, Misty etc...went a bit off pat with Spider but they kept that too :o I'm not sure I have ever had a dog in that already had a name thinking about it!

Tee hee hee, we have a rescue that was called Sadie and I felt like I was calling an errant child all of the time, she is also quite refined, she became Sadie the Lady and now just Lady, as it sounded similar.

Come on then spill what did you name the pooch?

A x

We get plenty of owner surrendered dogs who don't know their name, or at least don't respond to the name WE get told!

I have no problem with changing a dogs name unless there is good reason not to eg a blind dog.

If the dog is from a pound, ie a stray, then it will have only had the name a short while.
