Hi all!

I just had a feed consultation/calculation done for my 12yr old Irish Cob. He’s been on Dynavena Activ Protect for little over a year after three colic episodes fall/winter 2018 (once a month).

We haven’t been able to ride much for the past 3 months as he had back pain and he’s gotten pretty chubby. And then he had another colic episode in December.

I was recommended Pure Feed easy and have finally managed to get it delivered (I live in Switzerland).

I understand that it is supposed to be fed damp. How damp is damp? And how long before feeding can you prepare it?

Im in a large stable (over 30 horses) so it has to be very easy for the staff. They won’t go to the kitchen to put water in etc so I would have to prepare the feed in buckets the evening before. The feeding times are 5, 9.30 and 15 (they then get more hay later in the evening).

Im also wondering about the transition from Dynavena to Pure Feed. Over how long of a period did you do it? As he is prone to colic, I’m always nervous.

I’m also changing minerals to another brand, should I also change slowly?

Thanks!

In your situation, I would put a couple of carrots into the feed bowl and that would be it. He has plenty of weight, chubby as you say, so dos not need hard feed, especially when out of work.

I used Pure Easy for one that was eventing. It has a fair bit of energy in it, which will be converted to fat. It has feed value and is not just a chop.

Not over impressed with staff who won't add water to a feed either, does not seem very caring. Could you put a small screw container of water in the bowl if you are keen to feed a feed that needs water? Or a jug of water in the feed room? But, for staff not to be able to sort this would raise questions as to how suitable they were to also bother to check for injuries, pick feet, check water, check fencing.

I feed Fibre Balance from Pure Feed, and yes it's great for good-doers. I do wet it down, but I so feed Fast Fibre with it, which is a soaked feed - would they add water to a wet feed for you? If not, then do as Red mentions above, and put a bottle of water beside the buckets for them to use. Seems a bit of a silly rule, but hey ho!

I use Pure feeds.
When I was at RC camp last year we were instructed to leave covered feeds outside stable for the morning, whoever arrived on yard 1st was to pop feeds in.
I put a plastic beaker of water under the bucket cover and an old wooden spoon. I only fed the yard once over 4 mornings, the other campers were quite ok about this, I wasnt the only one.

At home it's only me, so I keep a water bucket in my feed store and use a plastic bowl to slop a bit of water in, stir and serve.

Ref damping the feed, enough water to slightly bind it, not have soup! Hope you get this sorted x
