I do find it bizarre that people automatically assume that a 'natural' preparation is as good, if not better than a fully studied prescription medication

That said, if you want to change it's your decision and your money.

I'd speak to your vet and let him know your intentions, and then start on the maximum advised amount of 'buteless' and follow the instructions on the packet.

As i said, I feel that giving a horse bute over a prolonged period of time cannot be benefical for her digestion.. ie ulcers.. I am only going to try this to see if it would suit her better, I am fully aware that a prescribed medicine that has been tried and tested would be the better option, however if you took painkillers all the time and someone offered you an alternative that was herbal and it worked would you go back to the prescribed pain killers or stick with the ones that were herbal and have a less detrimental effect on your body.

If however the Buteless does not work i will not hesitate to give her the bute again.. My main priority is my horses health after all.

I am in the same situation. My mare was diagnosed with arthritis and after 2 joint injections was on 2 x bute per day (she is a large heavy horse). I gradually cut the bute down and introduced Zerobute at their recommended levels. She has now been on the Zerobute for 1 month and is almost entirely off the bute and is sound. At one time, my vet thought she would be permanently on bute. She is also on Feedmark's ExtraFlex HA for her joints and has magnetic fetlock wraps on at night. Alternatives to bute contain devils claw and other naturally occurring anti-inflammatories. Whichever one you decide on, your best bet is to phone the manufacturer and discuss feeding it as not all products suit all horses.

I recently asked my vet about No Bute, He Just said to remember not to use it all the time because the horse can become immune to its effects if it used all the time? My boy also has arthritis (Mild in the coffin joint) he's not on Bute yet, but every so often he will be stupid in the field and hurt him self, trouble is he only has a mild case & I don't think he has realised he has a problem yet!

Am also having a problem getting him to accept that he is only happy hacker now having spent the past few years show jumping & schooling, He doesn't seem to want a quite life & he is only 13.

thanks

Have spoken at length with Vet and YO and we have decided to give the Buteless a try, She isnt in hard work.. lol doesnt know the meaning of the word.. .. basically a happy hacker enjoying being pampered by those around her. We have decided that even if she has to go back to the bute, this will give her system a little rest if you know what i mean from all the nasty chemicals.. She will be getting her first dose on Sunday ... how long does it take for it to work etc?

TBH I've never seen any good results with buteless. If you are worried about the negative effects of giving bute over a long period of time then you could ask your vet about danilon instead.
