Changing Insurance Companies - worth it under these circumstances?

I've just had my renewal quote from NFU through and it's a bit steep. I will shop around and have a look for comparison purposes, but given that my lad is now 15 and that he has an exclusion on one of his front legs, will it be more hassle than it's worth to move to another insurer? I've absolutely no complaints about NFU or their service its just a matter of bank balance really and my car insurance has shot thorugh the roof too and I've never made a claim on that !

I'm not sure that it would be cost effective - you'd have to declare the leg exclusion anyway. I think to a degree we're all victims of vets successes - only a few years ago a horse who was 15 or over was declared a veteran but since they can fix lots more problems now then the age has been extended by a lot of insurers.

I would be inclined to stay with them unless the premium has gone way beyond what you can afford. They have always got really good comments on this forum and I am currently going through a claim at the moment with my horse and they couldn't be more than helpful. I have however heard comments about some other companies, one in particular, who have been awful if you need to make a claim. Go back through some insurance posts on here and you will get an idea of what others think of various companies.

I have also gone through a claim for my car recently with a Less Than satisfactory insurance company and I went with them to save on my premiums but making a claim (which wasn't even my fault!) has been a nightmare. My insurance is due for renewal soon and rather than trying to save every penny on my premium I am asking around for recommendations for companies that are good to deal with.

Try shop around for alternative quotes the go back to NFU and see what they can do! They will generally try and beat a quite in my experience. You won't lose anything by doing it either. Do the same with your car insurance - I did this year (I am not with NFU though), i got a cheaper quote, went back to my existing insurer and they knocked £100 off my renewal and reduced my excess so i stayed!
