I've always been told you must never change a horses name, but is there really any harm in it?
When my dog was born, she was named Candy, but her next owners changed it to Annie and she (used to, she's deaf now) responds to both.

Could there be any other reasons not to change, or is it simply just superstition? Not jumping on the cracks, for instance!

The reason this came about is because I saw a wonderful foal named Eric and my goodness, I couldn't keep it that way! I was nicknamed Eric at school, I apparently looked rather manly in my school days and Eric was close to Emily :P
(Not getting the foal, it just sparked the question!)

I changed my arab X name.....he was called Geronimo! I really could not see myself calling him that. :D I dont believe in superstitions.....I changed it 7 yrs ago and nothing bad has happened.

My old boy was called Curly when I bought him (because of his long dreadlocky mane). No way in hell I was keeping that, so he became Jasper. He's been fab, lovely horse, perfect in every way, never seen the vet other than vaccs (touch wood) and never been unluckly for the 12 years or so between then and now. (If we have an unlucky streak now, I don't think I can blame the name change!).

You could change it to Rico, or similar?

I bought a horse called Napoleon, shorted it to Leo...turns out it was his life's work to try and murder me but I don't think the name was anything to do with it...

Trying to live up to his full name, more likely... World domination starts with conquering your owner :D

The old wives tale was to change a horses name was bad luck !! So far not had to do that with any of mine, but I liked and they suited the name, but my rescue cat was called Coca, did not like that so changed it to Timone :)

My youngsters name was changed by accident. He was bought at a sales, by the person I bought him from, in a pen of 4 foals. All very similar to look at, and a mix up with passports turned my boy (real name Benny) into Dexter (name on the passport). We sorted the passports out with little trouble, but I was then tasked with the problem of what to call him. We stuck with Dexter, as it is all I've ever known him as, and we sent off the passport to change the name to match his microchip number. He's been lovely despite the mix up and accidental name change!
