Would you change a horse's show name? my new mare's show name really isn't my cup of tea, but i'm so paranoid about bad luck... there's enough with horses as it is, and even my vet (who has profitted it!) said that i've had the most appalling run of bad luck over the last few years. so, would you change it, or stick with it, or just modify it a leetle beet....

her name's Katy Jones, btw. lovely horse, slightly daft name, imho! not nearly impressive enough for her!
any fantastic ideas for names including the word Katy...? *goes for long shot*

Boomer's in The Wolfman (should be the Mouseman) lol beat that

:P I don't think it's unlucky tbh if you really want to change it then you might aswell!

I added a name to B's passport/papers when I bought her - that way I have the choice. When I bought her we really hated her competition name, but it's growing on me......

my filly's called Perfect Ten.

i'll look totally daft on that, going into the dressage and scoring 5s and 6s... !
not my choice either, and as she's never been out, i think it's up for a change too...

I quite like that, try to think in terms of the song, opposed to dressage tests!

If it makes you feel better, I competed two horses for my YO last summer, one was called "the Eager Beaver" & the other was "Spongebob squarepants"

I love the name Katy Jones, I think it is SO cool! It is cool and it is 'not trying too hard'. It is very memorable as well, people will remember that, and rolls of the tongue beautifully. Makes her sound like a pop star too. I think it suits her character nicely too- judging from the pics Ive seen of her face.

I'm supersitious, and I wouldnt want to change a horses name, even if it really was awful.

hasnt been unlucky for me! ellie was 'chicka' on her papers...

i didnt want endless jibes about Tikka Masala etc...so she became Miss Ellie!

can i just say, i think 'Katy Jones' is actually a nice name! i like the idea of a horse having a 'complete' name - eg. Tom Quigley. but if you really hate it, how about something along the lines of Little Miss Katy? i cant honestly say how we arrived at Miss Ellie for Elz....it just happened!

At least you don't have one called 'Topless'.............. "And entering the arena now, we have kerilli, riding Topless'.......... Did once know of a horse called this...

kerilli - have u got any pics of her? (or have u already posted some elsewhere!!!) then we can see whether it suits her!!

I think its unlucky.....my lad is called Jovial James and it doesn't really suit him but the one show that I changed it for he stopped at a double, I flew over his head and then he decided to jump it, landing all over me!!!! My Dad suggested we permanently re named him 'Dances on People' after that, but we went back to Jovial James!

My horse was called............wait for it!................Shelley

How the heck can you call a gelding Shelley!!! His previous owner then changed his name. I'm not superstitious over name change. Think if you don't like it, change it, no problem

LOL as if i could criticise - im not gonna show u any of ellie schooling - old place, old bit, old rider, 234972398479th schooling session....nose a LOT higher than your girlies!!!!

she looks lovely, and i think the name suits her! good luck with her!!!!

I say do whatever makes you happy. I changed my last horse's name as he was very well known and I wanted him to have a new start and a slower life without people's expectations!
My current horse has what I think is one of the worst names I have ever heard of..."Dooederney Beauty" EEEEKKKK!! The thought of competing her under that name would make me die of embarassment!

My sister's small hunter has been to HOYS for the past two years under the name of "Chuckles" - she was not allowed to change the name as this was the name on his passport ... she has since sold him! I think that has to be the WORST show name ever.

I was a bi gutted with my boy's showname - he is a purebred arab, called mister j!?!? Where did that come from?! I did compete him for a while as 'the artful dodger' because he is one, but then started doing RC team stuff and they have to match their passport, so went back to mister J and have stuck with it now.
OH's mare is Dreamscape Diamond (grandad is King of Diamonds), which I think is much more impressive!
ETS I like Katy Jones too, I'd stick with that!

My registered mare has had to be shown with her registered name, a bit of a mouthful but nothing too silly. Luckily with the other two I have had recently I was able to choose the names that went on their passports

I show Chancer as Quite by Chance apart from BSPA shows where he has to go as What a Chance as this is the name on his BSPA passport and this is the only name they accept.

Only changed it slightly as this is how I got him - quite by chance.

I have always thought that changing a horse's name is unlucky and have not changed mine, in hindsight Murphy came with his name and I wanted to change it to Willow, but now after eight years Murphy seems like a better choice and not to poncey as Willow would have. I did get to choose his show name, Waterford Blue Diamond, as he was unregistered. Tarquin again came with his name and it suits him well, people still laugh when I tell them but he's Welsh cob x TB so I suppose it is a good choice as he's a cheeky chappy with a well bred side in his family.
My pony, which I sold, was called Flora (full name Merryford Flirtatious) and although I hated it initially it suited her, she is now called Merry which I think lacks imagination. The only horse I have ever owned that came without a name was my TB ex racer Little Ridge who was so ugly and had no personality so we used to call him Fridge at the racing yard. I never really managed to come up with anything suitable for him and have no idea what he is called now.
OP I think Katy Jones suits her well, she looks lovely.

My two are exracers, Darcy raced as Castle Valentine and Pinky as, well Pinky... I don't like either tbh, especially Pinky, its a terrible name but its what they are registered as so its what they will be known as. I might give Pinky something a bit 'nicer' for local shows - Raspberry Ripple is current favourite, choosen by my friends kids because she is roan - but if I ever affiliate her at anything she will be registered as Pinky.

For me they should keep whatever name they raced under or are registered as....... unless its something really lame!!!

Not everyone is superstitous over name changes, Andrew Nicholson changed Denzil Penberthy didn't he! Not sure what his name is now, it may be Silbury Hill or Henry Tankerville.

I never change a horse's registered name. It gives the breeder a way of tracking them down and hopefully getting the recognition if the horse does well.

My mum changed one of ours horse's once, she was called Stitch Bitch and she changed it to Idalina. The mare injured her shoulder very badly 6 months later and was retired as a broodmare. I dont need any more bad luck so they stick with their names

I like Katy Jones - I prefer horses with proper names.

I changed my last horses name and he was the best thing that every happened to me - (RIP

).

And I am definitely changing my new horses name as it's Foxy Flash which sounds like a child thought of it!

Katy Jones is a lovely name, really suits her elegance as well.

Mine's called Ronaldo and I hate that name. I'd change it if I could but he's an ex-racer and so it's nice for people to see his racing name too. And I'm superstitious.

I always find Eric a strange name for a horse.
