My horse is registered kwpn, but i don't like his silly show name!

I understand that the KWPN require all horses born in a certain year to have their name begin with the same letter...

... if i change his name, can it start with a different letter? anyone know if the KWPN will let me do this?

cheers guys (post also in comp riders but nobody seems to know!)

Yes there are instances when a horses name has been changed not sure what the rules are or the letter ruling is, Johnson is the letter V and his former name was Verdi.

Desperado has been changed from Desperados and prior to that Dark Boy.

Our friends sold a colt as a weanling at one of the select auctions, he was named Equal ZS and not only has his name been changed but the breeders suffix removed. He was recently licensed as Esteban.

Yes I had my horses KWPN name changed as it was absolutely dreadful.
However it took approximately 4 months to get it changed.
The horse had to have the prefix for the year, example 'S' but the name itself was open to change.

You can change a KWPN horses name up to the age of 3, after that you cannot. Hence why several stallions have had their names changed at the point of Licensing (either before or after). You cannot change the letter as that denotes the year, but you can change the name up to 3.

My horse was an 8yr old when I imported him and I was definitely able to change it. Has something changed recently?? that was about 4 years ago.
I received an updated passport with his new name plus S prefix.

Confusing replies! Does anyone know the true answer? Anyone intimately involved with the KWPN that we can ask...?

I would guess in light of the conflicting experiences the OP might be better to call/email the KWPN directly.
4 years ago it was definitely possible or i would still have a horse running under 'Sexy Eyes'!

Hi I don't know if your still looking for an answer but I figured i'd reply anyways on behalf of everyone else who is looking for the answer.
A horse is give a letter prefix to go with the year ie. A was 2005

If the horse has not sired/given birth to a foal, and im pretty sure they can't have won at a rated competition, and if they are under 3 years of age you can change their registered name but you must use the given prefix.

This said you also have the option of giving them a competition name at any age which can begin with any letter. This is all with the KWPN/NAWPN, otherwise passports do not require the horse to use their registered name, you must only list it if you have chosen to use a seperate competition name.

My mare is a registered NAWPN(same rules as KWPN) and her registered name is Elektra LWS and I listed her competition name as Its Elektra City(pronounced its electricity) this has all been approved.
