Hi,

I've decided to change my two JRT's over to a raw diet. To start with I have ordered a batch of food from Natural Instinct but am going to head to the local butchers at the weekend to see what they would be able to supply me with but am not really sure exactly what to ask for.

Are there any meats/bones that definitely should not be fed, should bones have lots of meat on them?

Thank you

You will find that beef bones are very hard and beef is not the best source of amino acids anyway so I don't feed it very often. The lamb I buy is the breast of lamb which is the rib and belly cut and is cheap to buy you could probably get 3-4 meals out of a breast for JRT's. I also get some lamb leg bones for them to chew on.

The bulk of mine’s diet is chicken, the ideal for maintenance is 80% bone 20% meat and this you will find on chicken carcasses and chicken wings so that’s the kind of ratio you are looking for in a maintenance bone meal. Chicken is a very good source of nutrients as a meat so it’s a real good base of the diet and is cheap. Raw and meaty is the guide!

Pork can be a little rich and can make them fart! But mine love pigs trotters and get them now and again. But some pork bones can be hard and it is important to feed human grade pork.

Try and avoid too much fatty off cuts and go for the bones. I will feed just about anything that’s going cheap and mine will get game as well if it’s in the sling bin of the game butcher next door, like deer pheasant and rabbit.

Just bear in mind muscle meat will put weight on and bones will fill them up without gaining weight.
