Hi

I have a 1 year old GSD bitch Her nose is getting quite badly chapped. Its dry and cracking.

She'd not bothered by it at the mo but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.

She's licking off what ever i put on it - any suggestions?

- she's always had a dry nose, is there something about her diet i prehaps need to look at?

I'm no expert when it comes to diet - but i'm sure someone on here will be able to help.

My spangle gets a dry/cut up nose and eyes when working and i slap on he Vaseline like it's going out of fashion. Seems to work well, even though they seem to lick it off it sorts it out.

I would pop her to the vet to be on the safe side. I've had GSDs a long time and it is not something I have come across.

Does she drink a lot? Where does she live/sleep?

Can you post a pic?
You have to post pics anyway, because I just made you a member of the GSD Mafia

- will have to take one of the nose though !

She lives in the house - at night confined to the conservatory with dog door

Will double check gums tomorrow (my shifts this week mean i'm only in the house for a couple of hours a day so i 'dog share' with my mum!)

Looked her over earlier and didn't note anything and would only see something obvious anyway

Will pop some vasaline on and spoil wednesday for her with a trip up the vets!

ah - thankyou, she's getting lighter and lighter (part of the reason i picked her as she was mainly black as a pup -thinking stables in the winter!)

Luckily she's short haired as the long haired one takes enough time to make 'house suitable' this time of year!

Yay another one for the mafia. I remember years ago one of mums stud dogs had a cracked noise similar to what you describe, but he was about 8 when it started. I think she kept it under control with loads of vaseline but never completely cured it. Probably worth letting your vet just check it .

My dog had this when she was older, i used to buy cheap vitamin e capsules, split them and rub that into her nose, worked very well.
