so as not to take someone else's thread off topic I thought Id start a new thread.

I've always found that for any hunter trial or xc event Ive entered, there is something in the rules about not wearing chaps. Something along the lines of you must wear long boots or johd boots and gaiters, but not chaps.

A few people said they havent heard of this for local comps but I was presuming it was a RC rule as it seems to appear in their schedules.

Yes riding club events are run under similar rules to BE and BSJA. So you do have to wear gaiters or boots unfortunately.

RC is no chaps - at Area 22s people wearing chaps had to remove them before competing and I have seen "no chaps" in the rules of many events at local levels. As SMM said many event are ran under BE, BSJA, PC rules and all state no chaps. you an pick up gaiters for the price of a set of good chaps so well worth investing in.

Hmm i wear half chaps (leather) and boots and have worn at champs and all RC events no one mentioned them now worried as have be tomorrow and planning on wearing I have long boots but the zips are iffy and havent got around to replacing them yet. will take gaffa tape incase i have to wear them

If they're leather ones and they look the same colour as your boots I guess they might not notice.

this is the wording from the riding club dress code rules..
Boots
Plain black or brown, which may also be top boots or jodhpur boots.
The boots should be of traditional style. Gaiters may be worn providing
they are of identical leather to the boots and have no decoration of any
sort.

see mine are the same colour and have no decoration so guess thats why I havent had a problem, will take my long boots as a back up plan

See... I heard the tack steward say this to someone at Craigie HT in April this year, they had chaps on instead of gaiters and were told they couldn't start unless they swapped for gaiters/long boots or took the chaps off?! If it is supposed to be for safety aspect, then surely going without chaps is worse than chaps instead of gaiters?!

If it's from an etiquette point of view, then surely a "please note this isn't really acceptable, please make sure they're correct next time" at RC level would suffice? (as long as they're plain/match jod boots and aren't pink with stars etc! ;) )

E.g. at my RC's last show there were some folk who turned up for the SJ not in "show attire" (our club days are "smart, but casual" dress, so they hadn't realised this was a "proper" show compared to the club days), we didn't stop them from competing though, just mentioned it for next time!

It's riding club! lol. They take everything very seriously. I've competed at both affiliated and riding club (Show Jumping and Eventing) events

The rules and the passport checks etc are far worse at RC. they like sticking to their rules. lol:)
