I have a coloured who locally does very well as a hunter, but I've been advised to show him in his ridden final for CHAPS UK Championships as a Riding Horse as he will be lost against the real hunters there. Some judges have told me he is so borderline he could do either, others have said riding horse and others have said def hunter as he has too much bone to be a riding horse! I have no idea what to do.... what is the general opionion please :) I dont know how to upload a pic my my youtube account the good video http://www.youtube.com/georgiewhitaker#p/a/u/2/pA7aSq91oNE
and you can see showing vids of him in action! Thank you all in advance

Thank you" he is 16.1 :) I have chucnked him up a bit recently to try and show him as a hunter but to be honest he's looking a bit fat now and I don't like it! So thinking be better to slim him back down and go for riding horse, just worried he might have too much bone and not be "flashy" enough! it's so hard x

He looks smaller than 16.1 in the video .... not saying he is, he just looks it :).

Have you had a look at past winners? That may give you an idea.

He is a really nice type, but as you say he is borderline, he will be in a class with hunters of about 16.3/17hh so may look a little small, however he is more hunter type eg movement bone etc, I would also advise putting a thicker noseband on him. He could also be a riding horse, but alot depends on the Judge and what they have before them on the day. what ever you decide I am sure he will not disappoint you, he is lovely

Well he might be lol that is what I bought him as 4 years ago and I have never measured him ;o) And yes looked at past winners and they are all different, which doesn't really help me I think it just depends on who the judge is and thier preference, which again doesn't help I wish it was all standard!! thank you x

Ok thank you, appreciate all the advice I can get! See my dilema he is sooooo borderline lol bless him to be honest if he gets any rosettes I will be happy as this is his first year registered :) x

Why don't you PM FMM on here?

She owns Humndinger but she might not see this thread. Post her a link to your video and ask her for her expert opinion.

He is very smart.
More of a small hunter type but too big sadly.
If he could open out a little more in his frame,he is rather overbent at times,he could slow down and cover more ground and have a little less knee action then I would do RH. The ride he gives the judge is also something to consider.
A darker tweed jacket would look good.
I see you also do WH so he is very versatile, you are lucky:D

Ok thank you for your advice, much appreciated! This vid was a couple of months back and I have worked on him not been so overbent now by relaxing myself much more so hopefully in another few weeks we will be there. I've always had fab comments from the judges about the ride he gives so *hopefully* he will impress the judges at CHAPS the same! He is actually my showjumper at heart but after a nasty accident I have lost my bottle which is why I got in to the showing, I am very lucky he is very versatile and an absolute sweetie on the ground :) thank yu!x

Enter both classes? dont forget chaps also do non native classes and also the chaps factor.. its like a star for the future class.

I actully think he has very nice movement and is flashy enough for riding horse.

Different judges at different shows tell me riding horse/hunter which is why I am in such a dilema :/ Ideally I guess woudl be idea to try and stalk the judges a bit and see what sort of horses they usually place in which classes etc but not sure how easy that is to do!

Aaaw thank you! I think so too but I am buyest :op i've entered about 8 classes over the the course of the show, ridden non native, sports and performance etc etc but the dilema here is for his "ridden not native" final and I'm not sure that you are allowed to enter both..... I beleive it's one or the other but then I may be wrong in which case that would be the perfect soloution and I would soon find out :) x

Just looked at your other video, what progress:D
He does at times come up in front more and then looks really special ,consider trying a double it may just give that extra lightness.
Good luck at the champs.

Thank you very much :) Yes I have been working really hard the past couple of months on his schooling so I hope that reflects by september time :) A couple of people have suggested a double so I think I may try that and see how he gets on, all this little extra's help! thank you so much for your feedback x

some of the best.. but if you like most basic advice was given to me by a chaps judge, in a non native class with a ride judge, she loved my mare but said take her out and gallop teach her to go forward more. not as in speed. but length of stride etc. (i was very proud as baby mare gave judge such a good ride judge was beaming. if only she had known 48 hours earlier mare had thrown a very impressive hissy fit in a ridden class at a county lol. )

The second bit was if your pulled in high up a good gallop can win a class!

Ah wow always nice to have compliments about your hossy, especially when they are baby!

and yes that's great advice, I don't really have anywhere to gallop mak, although at our show today the unused car park field was huge and we had a good gallop through that ;o) but There are tracks I can take him to so think I may do that the weekend before and let him have a real blast and enjoy his gallop! He is getting the hang of it in the ring now, think its his fav bit of the day :o)

I was the same, A judge at one show in a hunter class had us gallop up the long side in the go around, me and horse fluffed it.. I put leg on she responded then went disunited, major flop judge very nice and hinted in the indavidual she really did need to see a gallop!

good luck Ive always enjoyed the chaps shows, professional bu found the always a friendly crowd and have always found the judges willing to give feed back.

Going back to original question, I think a lot will depend on the judge on the day, my mare really wasnt a riding horse, but at lower levels she still always won/placed. she was a lot like yours. height build, but had more knee action.

Hunter classes again always won/placed qualified for equifest/royal london but i personally dont think she had the height. she looked a lot bigger from afar and me being a short arse made her look bigger!

Sounds like you have done very very well :D I am going for riding horse I have decvided I purchased my bling browband at the weekend! All very exciting :D thanks for your help x
