Just wanted to know is there any real difference between them apart from the look of them and is either one better in any way?

What do people prefer and why? And are either of them a better combination than long boots?

Thanks x

Chaps do up on the side
Gaiters zip up at the bac k
I think thats the difference

Chaps are the ones with the zip at the side, generally suede although can be leather. Gaiters are generally leather with a zip at the back or front. I believe chaps are actually not allowed for a lot of competitions? I am pretty sure riding clubs do not allow them, and I would imagine BD don't either. Not sure about the jumping disciplines, being a wuss myself

chaps can be anything like suede or soft leather. gaiters are the hard, shiny thick leather like long boots

thanks for all your replies. Do any of you ride in gaiters? and are they less/more comfortable than chaps?

I have chaps - suede with zip up the side for everyday riding. For competitions I wear black leather gaiters, which fit like a glove and look like long leather boots.

I struggle to find long boots to fit, they always end up baggy round the ankle or tight on the leg, too short etc, made to measure too expensive, so opted for gaiters. I love them.

BD rules allow you to wear gaiters with jodphur boots of the same colour, but I don't think they allow you to ride in chaps.

BE rules are the same - you're not allowed to wear chaps but gaiters are fine
