How do you know if a charity is? Does it have to be registered with the Charity Commission as I don't seem to be able to find it on their search. Does it have to have the charity number on the website?

Registered charities should display their number. If you can't find it, it might be a 'not for profit' company which is different.

Charities have to be registered with the Charity Commission, and they have to display their charity number on their website.

There are a few circumstances in which charities don't have to register: http://www.charity-commission.gov.u...o_register/Types_of_charity_index.aspx#exempt

Somewhere on the website of any organisation you ought to find something that says what kind of organisation it is. If it's a charity, it should be fairly obvious - it isn't something charities want to hide!

Unfortunately unless it is registered with the Charities Commission it is not an official charity, this could mean that they are nice people doing nice things without the proper registration, they could be a social enterprise, they could be not for profit or they could be scammers?

You pays your money and takes yer chance :)
