I want to raise some money for a specific charity next year, and am wondering there are any good long distance rides/sponsored rides I could do where I can choose which charity the money goes to?

Has anyone got any experience of doing this? Suggestions for where I could do it?

The longest ride I've done was a 15 mile sponsored ride, and I'm not the most confident rider, and I'd need someone (or multiple someones!) to do it with me on safe horses..but I think it would be great and Murphy would love it

I'm not a fan of riding on busy roads, or any roads really, so ideally it would be somewhere off road/mainly off road?

Most 'sponsored rides' will be short and not particularly challenging. I think people might be reluctant to give you much sponsorship for something they see as a bit of a 'jolly'. If you want to maximise the sponsorship you can raise why not invent your own ride? You will need access to a good route, are there any long distance bridleways near where you are? e.g. if I was to do soemthing similar near me I would use The Ridgeway. If you have a suitable route you could always make it a 2 day ride and find somewhere to stop overnight.

One of our RC members organised a sponsored 13 miles ride locally for Breast Cancer charitites. Over 20 of us joined a circular ride at various points, as the route passed our yards, and gathered in one of the villages to have our decorated bras (which most of us wore over our clothes lol) judged. We raised about £1000 and every-one had a fantastic time. It has been suggested that we make it an annual event. One of the things which people really appreciated was that no-one had to hack for miles to join the ride.

Impy, that's exactly the sort of thing i want to do...create my own ride or do a slightly more challenging ride somewhere. I don't know of anywhere near me where there would be an opportunity to plan a substantial off road ride (there is virtually no hacking from my yard), so I guess I'd have to travel somewhere...don't know where though?

Pearlsasinger, that sounds like it was loads of fun

Don't think I could do that from my yard though as the roads are so busy!

bex1984 whereabouts in leicestershire are you as at the moment i have the best hacking ever and i am in leicestershire! Sounds like a great plan, what charity are you doing it for? The prestwold estate would be a nice place to do a sponsored ride? And as of january its no longer a private estate but open to everyone - if you want any help i am a university student (aka a lot of time on my hands
