Hi all, I'm going to purchase a new hat. I'm liking Charles Owen ones. Any recommendations on the best one to get? Thanks😁

New stock should all be PAS015 standard so give the same degree of protection. The British Standard BSEN1384:2012 was withdrawn for competition use last year but there is still stock knocking around on sale. Still safe though, just a bureaucratic argument about not renewing the standard.

Personal preference over a skull cap or peaked - pros and cons over which people think is safer.
Find a shop local to you that stocks a few brands like Charles Owen, Harry Hall, Gatehouse, Champion.
Spend time with their fitter to get a good fit as a poorly fitting helmet can be worse than useless.

I have a Charles Owen J3 - love love love it! It's PAS015, skull so fine for cross country and it's low profile so looks nice. The reason I love it though is because it's the comfiest hat I've ever worn, fits perfectly - but you need to get fitted to see which hats fit your head shape (e.g. charles own = oval heads)

You do need to try on a few as different makes suit different heads.

You asked what the most protective hat was. If you look here www.bhs.org.uk/~/media/bhs/files/pdf-documents/beta-guide-to-riding-hats.ashx?... (Hope that's complete) it should give you a pdf document from the British Equestrian Trade Association which explains exactly how each standard is tested and how they differ. The SNELL standard appears to be the most rigorously tested including lateral crush, penetration and anvil testing to simulate a kick.

Sadly they are almost all found in a round shaped helmet which doesn't fit me as well - I'm an oval gal!
