For such gentle sweet graceful souls, whippets play very rough, which is ridiculous, because they also have paper thin skin !

This morning was so much cooler than the last few days so the boys were more raucous than usual on our walk and both ended up in the blood bin. One had a nick to the ear and the other to the lip. Teeny nicks that you can barely see - yet blood everywhere !! Both boys are light in colour so it was very noticeable blood splattered all over them. We had some strange looks walking back to the car. Panting blood stained dogs - I am sure people either thought we’d been out dog fighting or hare coursing.

Why can’t whippets just play like normal dogs🙈

One of mine had to have physio yesterday after a play related game. They play like absolute thugs, and my youngest is super fit and super strong and loves a good game of throwing other dogs to the ground. I don't let them play together very often anymore as my oldest got badly injured in a dog attack and needs coddling a bit now. Neither is ever allowed to play with other dogs despite having lovely temperaments. They are either too rough or the other dogs cant catch them and get frustrated and cross.

I think it’s all dogs! My two were especially bonkers this morning, I’ve had to tell them both off because Goose is meant to be restrained!

My lurcher definitely outplays Idris! Never thought I'd hear myself saying that, as Idris is completely bonkers, but he has taken to playing for a bit, then quietly removing himself from the paddock, and playing by himself in the garden instead! Wilfie is perfectly happy doing circuits of the paddock at warp speed if he hasn't got a spaniel to savage, so it works pretty well

There is a lovely little Whippet who lives on the same estate that I do, and ordinarily on his own, he is a very well behaved citizen - even does his business into a poop bag directly!

However introduce another dog - particularly anything greyhound/whippet/lurcher/ easily excitable type and it is like Jurassic World, even more so if it happens in the big rugby field - I once went sprinting over there thinking something awful was happening, to be greeted with several owners all sat on the grass completely relaxed , whilst their dogs of the various aforementioned breeds going round the field like absolute crack heads at warp speed.....I asked if everything was alright and one casually said "Yeah - this is typical behaviour - they all know each other and are absolute thugs!" 🤣

Next thing I knew, one dog came over and was absolutely covered in blood - the wound when it was eventually found was a tiny cut that required 4 separate people to locate it - I find it barmy how they play so rough but are equally so delicate - they're still one of my fave breeds though :)

They are such quirky things. Mine are so loving and soft and gentle and so good with people and dogs, but will kill a rabbit with such savage glee.

A daily occurence here! Most of our friends adopted Sighthounds after meeting ours and now when they call by its absolute chaos!
We are well used to it, and if one ends up cut its pretty normal. :D
