im going to see a cheap horse tomorrow.
it is about 2hours away and i'm debating weather or not to take the lorry and bring her straight back if i like her.

she a 5yo 15.2 wb, was backed last year and turned out.
not done much and needs to have some work on her they dont have time for.£950.
i want to buy her to have fun on for the summer and sell her on, or keep her to event.

should i ask if they can show me her ridden if she not bn worked since last yr.

what are your thougts and what should i look for (apart from the obvious of clean legs/good feet/eyes look ok and she good to tack up/hande.

and info/coments much apprechiated.
thanks, Sam

At the very least, see her tacked up, leant over and sat on. Ask now if theyre happy to show you that so you dont waste a journey. If they arent, dont go. If they refuse to when you're there, drive straight back home.

not for that price.. vetting nore really worth it at less than a grand. see her trotted up and do your own flextion test if you like.

I'd want to see her lunged in tack.. and possibly lent over, not too worried about ridden, but you need to see her reaction to weight and also to mountin and dimountin

for a horse who not been in work for a year i would want to treat as a unbacked horse, or a horse who has been turned away. i would either want to see it lunged or free schooled to see it paces and possible over a small jump!! but i personal would not want to c it under saddle if it ot been in work for 12 months

And when it turns out to bronc at the slightest amount of pressure put on it's back, what would you do then?

I'm sorry but it's the oldest trick in the book to sell something seriously cold-backed as 'backed then turned away'

I personally wouldn't ask to see it being ridden, but then I wouldnt really care to much if it wasnt doing what its supposed to be. You can check backs in other ways, esaist was is to use finger and thumb and apply firm pressure on either side of the spine paying close attention to horses reaction.

Not the best person when it comes to buying horses, I tend to come home with it anyway lol. But I would want to see it walked and trotted in hand, check body limbs feel for lumps and bumps etc

In all likely hood if it was a hionest genuine project due to the owners circumstancs a local person would have snapped her up at that price. Unless the seller lives miles from anyone I wouldn't even bother going to see. Of course this is just my opinion, but I'm surprised they have to advertise nationally (or even at all)to sell at that price.

You want to see it sat on, if they refuse don't buy it and don't get on first.

You only have their word that it hasn't been ridden for a year, and there is no reason at all why a horse can not walk around a school or up and down a lane if it hasn't been ridden in ages.

I went to see a pony earlier this year with the trailer (as it was far away). Same thing, pony had been sat on etc. last year but not done anything since. It was a 3yo though so I figured it couldnt be ruined yet! I just saw the pony tacked up and then trotted up. That was enough for me, I took it home! It was very cheap though so I could sell it for more as a companion if anything went wrong! The pony has turned out great luckily.

Of course you can only do that if you have no morals. But I'm glad it worked out OK for you this time.
