Hi, my mare has turned into a demon over the last few weeks, shes got no medical/back/teeth problems and isnt in season, she has an 'episode' of teenage drama every now and then but its getting unbearable, id like to find a cheaper alternative to oestress/pink powder etc. Im looking into other magnesium based supplements but any advice or remedies will be gratefully recieved, thanks in advance :)

The supplements you mention do different things so it depends on what you are looking for.

Some mares are starting to show some hormonal symptoms now so that could be your issue, but it could also be ulcers or hind gut problems, maybe due to the grass.

Or you can try a calmer and see if that helps.

I've used Relax Me for quite a while, it's a calmer but it works on the gut - it has magnesium in it and also yeasacc which is for good bacteria in the gut, plus B vitamins. It isn't cheap either though, in my experience the good things never are!

Is she already on oestress? Has it made a difference? I agree a lot of mares are showing season symptoms at the moment. If you have ruled out teeth saddle back pain etc what causes the drama? Is it spooky hormonal? Fear? A bad experience? It is worth trying magnesium based calmers and, if you dont compete valerian but I would def rule out hormone issues, pain and ulcers first

Shes not on oestress at the moment no, id like to find something for her i just cant afford to be spending £30/40+ on a tub that may not help and then be wasted. It seems very much hormonal, shes not a spooky mare and hasnt had any bad experiences with me. A new horse moved into the stable next door but one a few weeks ago and she was like it then, and then a new one was there for 2 days earlier this week and my other horse was taken out to be shod and as a result of the two things she kicked the wall so hard it fell through into the next stable. Shes not a particularly anxious horse either, she will shout a few times but shes never reacted so badly

Agnus Castus and chaste berries are supposed to be helpful herbs for hormone issues. Has this behaviour only recently started? My mare went through all the herbs going before switching to regumate which has worked wonders but costs a fortune
