Cheaper to have your own trailer or use a transporter?

As title really. If the horse I've asked for first refusal on came up for sale/retirement in the next couple of years, I would be able to keep a trailer on site at uni. It would mostly be used at Easter/Christmas/Summer to take him home, possibly to go to low level shows if all went well. I'm planning to do my trailer test over next summer regardless as its a skill I'm sure I'll need at some point in the future!!

work out the cost of servicing a trailer, repairs etc extra fuel and see how many time you could hire a horsebox for the same price

I did the sums, I cant remember exactly but I could rent a 3.5 box for something like 8 times a year for the BASIC costs of running a trailer&car or a 3.5t not including fuel

Of course if you are already running a suitable tow vehicle thats very different
