Hi,

Horse has grade 1 ulcers vet suggested a 12 day course of gastrogard (3 days 1 whole syringe then 9 days half a syringe). I don’t think it did anything, so I’m going to go ahead and do a different course. However, Gastrogard is so expensive, and I was wondering whether anyone has any cheaper omeprazole options (I remember reading a forum with a cheaper option) but I don’t remember what it was!

Thanks

Really?! How do I get a prescription?
Your horse has to be examined by a vet, for ulcer medication the vet may want the horse to be scoped, and if the vet thinks your horse needs this medication you buy it from the vet or get a prescription to present to a pharmacy, physical or online. I don't see how you will get a UK prescription for a horse that's still in Turkey. Also, most countries of the world do not allow you to import prescription only pharmaceutical products unless they are for your own personal use. That means for a medical condition you are suffering from, not something you are bringing in for pets or family members. You need to check the laws in Turkey to see if you can legally import this type of drugs.

We have Gastrogard here, it’s just 10x more expensive. For a box of 7 it’s the same price for a box of 14 in the UK. He has been scoped in Turkey where they found grade 1 squamous ulcers.

I was thinking since I’ll be in the UK next week I’ll be able to buy him a course of Gastrogard, but since it needs a prescription I’m not sure…

I’m not sure how possible it will be but can you get a vet prescription from Turkey and buy it online from a UK pharmacy?

My USA vet wrote me a script for Gastroguard that I fulfilled in the UK but annoyingly the pharmacy stopped taking USA prescriptions

With all due respect to Turkey, but I am 99% sure if the pharmacy stopped taking USA prescriptions then they would definitely not take Turkish prescriptions as this country is about 20 years behind in equines and their vet care. And there are only so many pharmacies that do stock gastrogard

Is Peptizole still available? Also omeprazole if I remember right.

You could maybe also use esomeprazole, which is legal to buy in the UK in 200 x 20mg capsules on ebay.

Oh! I never thought about esomeprazole. Does it have the same effect as omeprazole?

We have omeprazole tablets here for humans (Omesek) which is 28 capsules 20mg. However he has been on them for around a month now meaning he only receives 560mg of omeprazole daily. which is not enough

Yes it has been tested and works really well with horses. It just hasn't been licensed for horses in this country because the licencing costs so much and the market is already taken by the omeprazole products.

On ebay in this country you can buy 200 close-to-end-date for about £25, which would make it viable for a horse, I think. Omeprazole is also sometimes available the same.

Have a search online and you'll find what dose rate they tested it at. I think it was about the same as omeprazole.
