We've taken on an unwanted cat who has turned out to have the very early stages of renal failure. He is happy and hearty in himself so I'm loathe to have him PTS and would like to find a way to help him fight on for a little longer but I have only had him two weeks so as harsh as it sounds I don't want to be spending a fortune on his food. He is doing well on Royal Canin Sensitivity pouches from the vet so I'd quite like to keep him on those but wondered if there was anywhere I could get them cheaper online?

Check with your vet - but we fed a cat with renal failure on a combination of minced chicken and rice. You have to cook it yourself, but it works out much cheaper. As I understand it the trick is to reduce the protein to the absolute minimum - hence the rice. Cats are obligate carnivores so you can't remove protein altogether. But we were told that we could prolong her life significantly by cooking her food oursleves. She lived about 8 months, which was a good 6 months more than she was predicted to live. She was happy all that time - we couldn't have kept her alive if she wasn't!

My renal failure cat was pts in June having battled for 7 months with renal failure and I applaud you for taking this cat on. Unfortunately, my cat refused any renal diet food, which did not help her.

I also recommend feeding home cooked fish/chicken and rice as well as providing fresh water at all times. I found my cat drank and weed a lot. My cat also had Fortekor tablets and also needed a tablet to help her tummy, I think she had Omeprazole for this as she had gastritis.

Renal failure cats can live for years with the condition.

Your cat is very lucky to have such a caring person and I hope she does well.
