Check chains

The ones I use have a sort of medium link and I got one from my training class and the other was from a local markets pet stall! So many places refuse to sell them these days but used correctly they are a good tool!

The smaller the link, the more severe the action.
You need the right gauge and link for your dog.
It also must be the right way around (if dog is on your left, chain comes up and over from the left through the ring, not up and under from the right, if that makes sense)
Those big thick 'round link' long ones you see people using, sitting around the dog's shoulder, tend to be useless.
I prefer the long 'oblong' links personally as those are the only ones we are allowed to use in competition (on the dead link).
Sprenger make the best, no contest, and you can get them online.
I would talk to someone who knows how to use one properly, someone who can see your dog, and they could probably advise better.
You can try a half check in the interim if you have any concerns, most places still sell those! They do close, but not fully.
A slip lead does exactly the same job too but they tend to be rope/nylon so tough on the hands and not long enough for a good training lead and they have no option to not choke (IE there is no way to clip it onto the dead link)

He pays no attention to a half check.

Training people as well as folk on here have said it may be a good idea. Will google.

Thanks

Go for a thin small link then ,about three inches larger than his neck size, get someone to teach you how to use it/correct way of putting on.Never had a failure, and I retrain some silly toads here!Mind you,if ,like the chump who turns up to walk the rescues, don`t use it properly and consistantly, then a reversion to an ASBO dog is immediate.
