Hello All,

Baby horse has some inflammation of his check ligament (verified by ultrasound) not lame as per, but it is swollen and hot at certain times of the day, generally between the icing and claying phase. Currently on space restricted turnout due to being a head case if he is in the stable too long (self harming):

Routine at the moment is:

Ice for 20mins am
Turn out in bandages all day (boots were at just the wrong height and running the check)
Bring in, ice 20 mins
Leave naked legs for a couple of hours
Clay from the fridge and bandage

Has anyone got any other tips advice on what I should/could be doing? Any good experiences with alternatives to clay?

Thanks in advance

Charlotte xx

Hi there,

Sounds like your horse is suffering with the same thing my mare currently has :-(

My mare tweaked her check ligament, firs vet refused to scan it and said she was fine (even though she wasn't). She started to get worse, and was standing as though she was laminitic (she wasn't). Had a different vet out,who has been great. She has been scanned, has been shod differently and has also had the phsyio out for a few minor tightness issues in her back.

It is frustrating, i think just keep doing what you are doing really. Follow the vets advice and stick with it.

My poor mare moved yards and was in an isolation field for a week, poked and prodded by vets, farriers and phsyio and is now on a restricted diet and on pen rest. I feel so sorry for her, but she is coping well. Luckily, i am allowed to ride, at the moment we are doing 40 mins of just walk (although she sometimes has other ideas) and gradually increasing it. She has her next scan in 2 weeks.

She has been through a lot in a short space of time, but as long as we can do everythign we can, they should come back better than ever. I also use magents on her everyday, so you could try getting a pair of magnet boots. I know some people aren't keen on them, but they have their place and they help keep her leg down.

If anyone has any ideas on how to keep my mare entertained, that would be fab. She has soaked hay during the day, grass at night and her snack ball but she is a very insecure mare :-(

I hope he comes right for you, keeping everything crossed.
