My mare is lame and i'm panicing and fearing the worst. Got the vet coming out but can't help thinking the worst. She is about 3/10 lame has no heat and no particular swelling but her leg feels filled along the inside down from her knee. Anyone had a check ligament injury...what were your symtoms??

My mare has been going so well and until Sunday felt the best she ever has. I had just entered our first event and now feeling really upset that my season might be over before its begun :(

Any replies appreciated.

One of my Arab mares has done both her front check ligaments.

Each time there was a small swelling on the inside just below the knee. She was never lame though.

She was given treatment and she has been back in work for two years now.

She has completed two full seasons of endurance including a race ride where she came 3rd in a racing finish and the Golden Horse Shoe (100 miles over rugged going over Exmoor) There has not been any more problems and she has never been lame.

My boy injured his check ligament 6 years ago, he went 5/10ths lame very suddenly, minimal swelling below the knee on the inside of the leg and minimal heat, had 2weeks box rest, then gradual return to work over a 3 month period and then never had any further problem with it, we were doing BSJA, dressage and hunter trials. He has recently torn his suspensory ligament in the same leg, but i don't think this is related as the scans don't show any problems what so ever with the check ligament now...

Hope this helps

My old boy recently came in hopping lame with swelling & heat just behind his knee down - but not that much heat or swelling.

I put him on box rest, with hand walking 5-10 mins twice a day, and cold-hoseing/icing 10 mins twice a day. I spoke to the vet who agreed this was the right course of action, and I could have taken him in for scans etc but she said this would only confirm how long he was likely to be out of action, it wouldn't change the treatment!

3 weeks later, he is back being turned out and ridden. However, it can take up to 6 weeks or longer I believe.
