Just had news from vet that she reckons my mums mare has pulled her check ligament. having an ultrasound on friday to be doubly sure :(
it was a 2.9'xc event yesterday, sort a fekk two fences from end, carried on clear and fine. untacked, washed off and her leg had swollen up completely. ice pack on and bandage. then hoding and like ice at home, another bandage
then this am no better got vet out and she reckons its check ligament. bit depressed at moment, poor mother!! :(
so she reckons around 3 months rest
worst is that it happens before a big event, riding club champs at ardingly (ode) so mum upset bout that aswell! they always manage to injure themselves before the one big thing in year!!
anyone had this in past, any good stories, recovery etc. we all need cheering up at moment, the horse is our pet, whole family ride her!! :(
xx

Oh no, sorry to hear that :(

Our old family horse did a check ligament. Badly as well. He had 6 weeks box rest and then was chucked out in a field for a year.

He came back totally sound. He was 7 when he did it and after that he did BSJA, evented, pony club, hunted. You name it he did it, he even played horse ball! He lived untill 26 and was sound untill the day he died. In fact he was the soundest of all our horses. You couldn't see any damage from the outside and when he was pts (from colic) the vet was amazed by how clean his legs were. Said they were the legs of a 10 yr old.

It was awful at the time having to turn him away for so long but it made sure it healed properly. That's the only thing I would be wary of, make sure she's had as much time as poss for it to heal :)

Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine and she will be as fit as a flea once it's mended :)

I helped to re-hab a horse who had this injury, did it whilst jumping XC. He had 3 months box rest and came back into work successfully. Still fine today so far as I know.

Odd,??? thecheck ligament usualy comes into play with a very tired hose when the reflex reaction from the stretch receptors in the tendon fail to respond to theload and the ligament has to catch the weight. All this sugests to me that it probably is not too severe . I had a good point to pointer that did this but went on to a grand old age as a hunter and never a sugestion of a problem, so dont despair:):)
