Ideas and suggestions please...
My horse is 15 now and I event him. He has always been very fit and sound apart from an injury to his deep digital flexor tendons in both hind limbs when he was 6. However since coming through we have had no further issues with him and I've managed to continue competing.
For the past week his left foreleg has had some weird swellings and I cannot fathom out what is causing it.
I first noticed it a few weeks ago but it had disappeared the next day and he was sound so I thought nothing of it. About a week later it was there again but for a few days on and off. Once he had walked it disappeared. I'd been having a few issues with my farrier leaving his toes very long and I was worried that it was putting strain down the back of his leg so I have since changed and the new guy has made a fantastic job of them. I made no comment about the leg before he shod him but he did tell me when he'd finished that the hoof was out of balance quite badly on that leg and that it could take him a few days to get used to the new balance.
He has now been shod a week and the swelling is still there but it seems to only be there in the evening when he has been stabled for a few hours after coming in from the field. It is slightly warmer than the other leg but not hot and the fluid seems to sit mainly on the inside. He has a small squishy bump on the inside about an inch below the knee and it seems to fill from there down.
I have been bandaging him over night and he's walking in the field all day and it is fine. He doesn't appear to be lame, we have trotted him up on both hard and soft surfaces. I thought it could be the check ligament but I'd have thought it would stay swollen!?
Last night the swelling went down a bit after I had walked him but not completely. I've also been cold hosing it twice a day.
Does anyone know what it could be or is it just best to bite the bullet and get it scanned?
Apologies for the essay!!!
