I have just had the vet out and my boy has a damaged check ligament we think that he has done it in the last 24 hours so I have to ice it for the next 72 hours then he will scan the leg to see the damage. First question, what to use to ice it with I cant buy anything it will take to long to arrive. So at the moment we are useing frozen peas they seem to stay cold for a couple of hours, does anyone have any better ideas. Also any advice to aid recovery would be appreciated. I have heard a large glass of wine helps.

20 mins cold hosing is great - I did it 4 times a day when my boy strained his check ligament.

And yes - a glass or 3 of wine really helps!!!!!!

Goos luck - fingers crossed it is not too bad.

I used the ice-cube bags - from supermarket - over a layer of gamgee. They're great as they wrap round well, last a decent time and are reuseable if you're careful, and you don't have to sacrifice the peas! You just have to remember to whip the bandage off once the ice has melted so that the plastic doesn't start heating the leg up again.

I am sure you know this, but don't leave ice directly on the leg or you can give him an ice burn to go with the check ligament damage.

My husband has a gel pad which he bought when he hurt his neck a few years ago, it can be used either cold from the freezer(stays as a gel and therefore squishy) or hot when warmed in micro wave. I think you can pick them up from most chemists or perhaps larger supermarkets or perhaps sports shops? think it was about £8. may be worth a shot.

Bear in mind that it takes a week or so for the extent of the damage to show up. I know as our pony did hers and on first scan it looked ok but a week later the damage was clear. A year and a half and one foal later and she's sound as a pound. It just suited us to do it like that but he needen't be off that length of time. As you caught it early the prognosis will be good.

you are along the right tracks by doing lots of cold treatment with it now. The more you can do early on the better. It may be worth taking a look at www.gamereadyequine.com as the game ready machine is perfect for use with these types of injury and saves all the cold wet hosing. :-) Any questions PM me as I have one myself which I use on a number of horses. Good Luck hope all goes alright and it is nothing too serious :-)
