At the weekend I was driving home from work and was on a slip/link road between two busy motorways when a dog ran into the road and was hit. It got up, the traffic stopped but one car clipped it again on stopping. I got out and ran after the dog. Three other men did, it bit two of them, it was frightened, then it collapsed at the side of the "fast lane". We tied it to the barrier in case it got up and checked its collar, but there was no tag. We covered it with a blanket and someone rang the police, who put up 20mph signs. The police took 40mins to come. The dog was hurt but seemed to be perking up. When the police came they said it could be another hour until a vet got there, so I had them lift it into my car and set off for my own vets. Sadly the dog died on the way there. I managed to get a friend to come and scan the dog, which fortunately was chipped, so I could ring the owner. The extra sad thing about it was they lived and were searching in the area five minutes away, and if he'd had a collar tag with a number on we could have got them to him or got him to a vet sooner.

So please urge everyone you know with a dog to check they are traceable if anything horrible should happen.

And dog wardens are only obliged to look for tags when they find a stray - the law hasn't caught up with chipping. All mine now have tags after I discovered that, you can get them off ebay for less than £2

Chips are great, all my dogs and cats have them, but they need the animal being taken to a vet/warden, so a collar tag is quicker in an emergency.

Exactly ^^^^I don't understand why all dogs don't wear tags!, after all they are more frequently found by a member of the public when they get out, so why would you not want you dog simply returned asap giving people the option of simply reading your number off the tag...rather than it being carted off to a vet/dog warden.

^^ and the financial cost of the latter is not insignificant, here it's about £60 if reclaimed within 24hrs. There's an additional charge for each day spent in kennels and a one-off charge if the dog has no ID when found - if you didn't find and pick up the dog until just before the seven day limit you could have a bill of about £200. :o

Also:

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 mandates that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of it’s owner either engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. A telephone number is optional (but strongly advisable). An owner can be fined up to £5,000 if the dog is not wearing identification.

Sorry to hear about the dog :(

thank you Honey08 for posting this, and also for caring enough to help the dog when so many wouldn't, I'm so sorry he didn't make it:'(
