Waffled a lot!
At the weekend I was driving home from work and was on a slip/link road between two busy motorways when a dog ran into the road and was hit. It got up, the traffic stopped but one car clipped it again on stopping. I got out and ran after the dog. Three other men did, it bit two of them, it was frightened, then it collapsed at the side of the "fast lane". We tied it to the barrier in case it got up and checked its collar, but there was no tag. We covered it with a blanket and someone rang the police, who put up 20mph signs. The police took 40mins to come. The dog was hurt but seemed to be perking up. When the police came they said it could be another hour until a vet got there, so I had them lift it into my car and set off for my own vets. Sadly the dog died on the way there. I managed to get a friend to come and scan the dog, which fortunately was chipped, so I could ring the owner. The extra sad thing about it was they lived and were searching in the area five minutes away, and if he'd had a collar tag with a number on we could have got them to him or got him to a vet sooner.
So please urge everyone you know with a dog to check they are traceable if anything horrible should happen.
