Okay, so as some of you may now i am looking for a first horse.
I need to know if i've forgotten any essentials (I just really need a place to write it all down and people can tell me in advance if i've forgotten anything).

Obviously i will buy them to fit my horse ;)

So:

Rugs : Fleece, Turnout, Stable
Tack : Bridle, bit, martingale (if needed), and professionally fitted saddle.
3 x numnah/saddle pad, tack cleaning stuff (can anyone recomend?)
Boots (if/as needed)
grooming kit - body brush, curry comb, flick brush, hoofpick, sponges x 2, conditioning spray for tail
First aid kit
headcollar and leadrope (x2)

Typical I've been an idiot and forgotten a load, i do know there is some more to get but i cant remember :o
Help me and my numptiness please :D

Feed bowls
water buckets
lick holder
wheelbarrow, mucking out fork
yard brush
Feed containers
feed scoops and stirrer
Haynets

Travel Boots (for horse)
spare headcollar and leadrope

still thinking though ...........

Are you diy or full livery?
Fork, brush, shovel, wheel barrow
Water/feed buckets
feed bins, scoops
haynets
girth, stirup leather and irons

Depends on where you will be keeping your horse and what is included/available for use:

Wheel barrow
Metal poo picking fork
Plastic shavings fork
Pooper scooper/scraper
Yard/stable broom
Brush and dustpan

Haynets
Salt lick

Water buckets
Feed buckets + covers
Feed stirrer
Feed bins
Feed scoop
Knife to cut carrots/apples
Brush to scrub out feed buckets

Shavings/straw

Exercise sheet
Drying sheet/wickaway

Fly mask (summer only)
Fly spray (summer only)

Mounting block
Grooming kit box
Mane/tail brush

In first aid kit - hibiscrub, dermagel, cotton wool, sponges

Not sure everything is 'essential', you could have a flick through the Robinsons/Rideaway catalogues for inspiration.

NAF tack cleaning stuff - I love it.

TBH if I were you, as long as you have the basics as above, plus a basic but well-stocked first aid kit, I'd be buying extras as I go along. I have SO much stuff now for almost every eventuality, yet I'm still making lists of things to buy - need new exercise boots, new bit, second sheepskin numnah, new stuff for first aid kit since horse decided to bleed all over all my cotton wool... etc etc etc!

It quickly mounts up

You will probably find you need more rugs than that, esp if he/she will be clipped.

A couple of summer sheets are useful, and a duvet or blankets for layering if it gets very cold (charity shops are quite good for them)

If you are planning to show/compete you might want a 'show set' of matching fleece or summer sheet and travel boots/bandages and tail guard/bandage.

Rubber matting?

Just read through this thread - crikey it's scary to think about all the stuff we have!

I know our tackroom is overflowing yet there's always something one of them needs - much to my banks (and dad's) annoyance!!

a good one to add to the list - although not a necessity - a washing machine that can handle all the hard wearing horsey crap you'll be chucking into it!! I like the look of that LG one that takes up to 11kg! Boring I know but here's nothing worse than manky numnahs/rugs/boots etc!

To be honest no matter what you buy there will be always be something else you want, get ready to spend the rest of your life buying things and ending up with so much stuff you wonder where it all came from.
Rugs rugs rugs you will never have enough

Personally I wouldn't buy too much to start with as lots of friends often have stuff they don't use and would be happy to pass onto a good home. Also, you don't always know exactly what you want until you get to know the horse.

At this time of year I'd say it is essential to have plenty of turn out rugs of different weights with and without hoods.

Hay nets - careful you get the right size holes, small holes mean it takes longer for the horse to feed, big holes for skinnies you want to feed up!

Feed scoops don't seem to be on the list.

Baby wipes also extremely useful and so are old towels.

Also we have a "human snack box" which I fill with cereal bars etc then if we're starving at the yard we can have a quick bite to keep us going until we get home!!!! Have been known to have the odd chocolate bar in it too!!!

I don’t have anything else to add to the list, but PLEASE stop referring to yourself as a numpty, and start believing in yourself a bit. You make yourself out to be so novice and unsure of everything that I would advise you not to get a horse yet, however I get the impression you’re doing it because you don’t want someone jumping down your throat because they don’t agree with your ideas on horse care/riding/whatever. Stop worrying someone will get annoyed and start telling us how ace you are at things, because I’m sure you are, and once you start believing in yourself you’ll be more than capable of caring for a horse and riding one without being ‘overhorsed easily’ – a phrase I notice you quite like. You won’t be overhorsed if you’re more confident 

I hope you don’t think I’m having a dig, as I’m not, I just want to read a post from you that’s got a bit more self-confidence!
