A full cheek snaffle. What are the cheek pieces used for? I thought it was to encourage balance but it has been ages since I used them... Is that right?
We use it as a general aid do turning, helps with those who have brakes but not cornering, It gives the face an extra "push" round. It's why we're using one for babies now, that and the similarity in action to a liverpool/buxton on plain cheek.
The full cheek snaffle is very similar to a fulmer only there is no loose ring. Some horse settle better in the full cheek snaffle and some in the fulmer depending on whether they like the loose ring
The full cheeks are generally used for stearing, they are ideal bits for young horses as they put pressure on the side of the face when you are asking for a turn so the horse know's what you want.
They used to be used in the racing industry to keep horses straight, same idea as the young horse situation but I think they went out of fashion due to the injuries they can cause in high speed falls!
Oh so thats the difference between a fulmer and full cheek. I htought they were the same bit! You just got varients of loose ring and eggbut type attachment
Yeah that's pretty much the only difference, it's like an egg butt versus a loose ring. The full cheek do tend to be a bit bigger so if they like hollow mouths they will generally like the full cheek but if they prefer normal bits they will like the fulmer. Total generalisation though, they are always exceptions to the rule!
A fulmer is used to help turn the horse. They are considered 'training bits' i use one on my horse.. they are often found on jumpers where quick turns are needed..
