I've just had a phone call from a lady who was after the old owner of my house (moved in February). When I explained that she no longer lived here, the lady then asked if I had horses and if I do, could her niece come and ride my horses!!!! Erm, no way! The bloody cheek of some people.

What a nerve!!
My pet hate is people who think that as a horse owner you are operating some sort of free riding school, I'm sick of people asking if they can come & ride my horses, I think it's really rude.
I wonder what they woud say if I asked when I can come & take their car out for a joy ride!

Plus it's really not safe to put a girl on my horse when I have no idea about her riding ability. My mare is not a beginners pony or a quiet RS plod.

I get that all the time, It really bugs me when people assume they can come and ride my horse. It's true that if you don't ask you don't get but some people just tell you "oh you have a horse, i will ride it" erm no you bloody won't lol :)

The cheek!!!!!!

I also get this, often from people I DO know but haven't seen for years, as well as strangers.

I have now resorted to "Not bloody likely". That usually puts an end to it :D

I had one better....

Had my daughters 14.2 Irish hunting COB for sale, word got round locally and a youngish (17 yr old) contacted me and asked if he could have the ride until he was sold. I thought it wasn't a bad idea (provided he could actually ride) so took things further. I sent photos and his details then...

He came to see said pony, watched him being ridden, spent around 4 hours with us and arranged to come back and ride him.

Next visit he came and said 'Oh by the way is he a cob?'....answer err YES obviously.....

He replied.......

'I don't like cobs have you anything else I can ride??'

Said wonderful COB is now in a secure loving hunting home, said boy is nowhere near me anymore

OMG! How cheeky & rude! I would of slapped him! :D

Thats certinly cheeky.

I was out riding once, and got stopped by a girl who asked where i got the horse from, and wether it was a riding school horse, i told her no, it was my YO horse and was riding her till my horse was sound, then she asked me for a go, i told her that she couldn't, and she asked my why, well i said, for one i don't even know who you are, it's not my horse and i don't know if you can ride. She kept reasurring me that she could ride, and the owner will never know, she only wanted to go round the block, and i could keep hold of her.
I told her i don't bloody think so, and carried on my way, in which she follwed down the road, asking all sorts of questions, and weather she could come to the yard to ride the horses :O

I told her the YO wasn't looking for a helper/rider as that was my job, but she just wouldn't get it grrr, i trotted off in the end and didn't go down that road for a while.
I know some people just want to help, i was the same, but when they just won't leave you alone, its sooo annoying, especialy when you don't know them.

Oh and another time, i came down to the yard to find a lad, who was the YO's friends, friend, riding my unbroken, and recovering from castration, 2 yrold.

Said lad and the YOs friend had brought leo to he yard and i bought him off her, and he thought he could just jump on when he felt like it and try and gallop him round the field, and they just watched!!! I had met the guy a few times, and he was a bit of a ponce, thought he could get away with everything, and certinly didn't like the gob i gave him, he didn't come back after that, thank god, though he left me with a present, he'd been on a strangles yard and didn't tell anyone, and as leo was the only one he touched, (the others were in the back field, and leo in a little padock, so he could recover from the castration) leo came down with it a few days later. ggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

My previous horse was stolen when i let a previous owner have a supposedly innocent ride down the lane. I was walking down the lane with horse & rider when we reached a quiet area well out of the way of people when they claimed i need not go further as they were taking him & legged it down the road. Heartbreaking & shocking scenario, i did not get my horse back.

Oh gosh thats terrible:eek:,
I had this happen with a dog, i was walking him and got approched by a guy who started asking questions about the dog, how old, breeding, how much i paid, and his name. The guy started running off shouting his name, and being a young dog, thought this guy was playing, and followed him, the guy managed to get him into a car and drove off with him, but thankfully, after a week in his "new home" he escaped and the dog warden caught him, and scanned his chip.
Some poeple are heartless b**rds.

oh my gosh! must of been terrible! i would of ran after them!

My brother in law thinks my horses are a free riding school. I have given in once, under extreme pressure from OH. My horse is sensible enough to allow small children on him, but I dont like just anyone getting on hm as he was a riding school horse and I dont want him thinking he is going back to that life. He just put up with two stupid kids flaping around trying to make him 'gallop' in the arena. I got glared at for days after that though, he was not impressed. They also wanted to ride MiniTX's mare, who is gorgeous. However, although she has a great temperament and absolutely adores babies (human and equine), she does not suffer fools and she is a sports horse and fairly sharp with it. Both kiddies got upset I wouldnt let them ride the 'pretty horsey'. I've since been badgered by them to ride the 'safe one', ie my cob. No way, if you want to ride, find a riding school, I dont run a private riding school for family!

No one has mentioned insurance, not only can you lose your shirt for injury caused, don't give lessons or anything that can be construed as instruction (eg; you hold the reins like so) because that can come back to bite you on the butt (unregistered/unqualified/uninsured Instructor blah, blah, blah) but if you are on a YO's property they can be sued as well for the teeniest thing if someone is so inclined to do so. Not worth the risk.

I won't let anyone handle or ride any of mine, I like my house, I have no intention of giving it away on a plate to someone who injures themselves riding or handling my horses.

I actually do have public liability for the horse farm but I'm not telling them that.

When i hurt my back years ago and coud not ride i had loads of people badgering me to ride my mare while i was unable.
After finally being ground down i said to each one of them, ok ride her in the field but do so at your own risk and she is not an easy horse to ride.
Good faithful horse promptly dumped each of them one by one, an happily stayed in the field having a rest until i was able to ride again.
When anyone comes to my yard now to ride, i explain to each and everyone that riding has its risks and you get on the horse at your own risk and do so with the knowledge that if you fall and hurt yoruself there is no come back on me as you choose to get on the horse.

i get so many parents asking to "pop" their toddlers onto my little section A cos he is small & sweet looking, sham he is so nervy that its not funny.
the worst was a bloke that grabbed his 3yo son & threw him up on Andys back without warning its a good job im quick at grabbing small children as And's bless him went vertical & 3ft sideways in one move (over me!) in his panic to get away & hideb ehind his Mum! i really cannot repeat what i said to the bloke on a public forum but it was less than unpleasant.

dont mind people asking but once you have been told no, drop it.

I read of a case where a man took his small child onto private land, crossed two fields, climbing over two fenced to put the child on a horses back.

The horse threw the child off, injuring it, and the man tried to sue the owners of the land / horse. He did not win!

I have been approached a couple of times by people I vaguely know who have said " oh, I used to ride when I was younger, can I take him (my pony) for a ride". To which I replied on both occasions, "OK: I used to race single seater cars when I was younger, so while your riding, I'll take your car for a drive OK?" They both declined...pratts

Not really relevant to this in terms of being equine but made me remember a very funny scenario one day!

I was with a friend who was a pro skateboarder sponsored by redbull at an event and he by all accounts had a pretty snazzy skateboard (!) and this guy sat on the ramp with a group of mates/pretty girlfriend and shouted 'here mate, can i have a go on your skateboard?' to which my friend picked up his board and walked over offering it out and replied 'here mate can i have a go on your missus?'...so funny, neadless to say he didn't take up the offer of trying the board!

The yard we keep our horses at is DIY and the owners dont have horses or even like them much, but their daughter who is about 9 now wants a pony and we made the mistake of letting her sit on one of the horses, now everytime we go up to ride shes there waiting for her turn and her mum has even gone and bought her boots, hat, jods....but NO bloody pony!!!!

Don't think people realise that just because you said yes once, it doesnt mean your going to everytime.

That is a difficult situation for you Thembu. You wont want to fall out with the yard owners but it is not on for them to think that their daughter can ride your pony in this way.
