I’m feeling a bit sorry for myself at the minute. Arlo has had 3 months off so far, partly because I wanted to give him some time to mature and partly because I was waiting for an operation so knew I would be able to ride for a while anyway. Up until Wednesday this week I had been doing groundwork with Arlo a few days a week. I’m now laid up after my op and can’t even do his general day to day care which I hate! So I’m very bored and although I’ve got lots to look forward to in the new year horse wise, I feel like I’ve got ants in my pants and struggling to be patient!! I’m not one for sitting around!!

So I’m currently lying on the sofa feeling sorry for myself wishing I was out riding or doing something horsey!

So please entertain me guys, I would love to hear/see pictures of what you guys have been up to with your horses recently? Give me inspiration for when I bring Arlo back into work on the new year!! Also how do you guys cope in periods of no riding? 😊😊

How frustrating for you! Will you be out for a while?

I am feeling very happy today. Had my first lesson with a new instructor. My mare has had time off, vet investigations and physio treatment. Hopefully now I can reach my goal of competing in a Prelim shortly.

I've found an instructor that I really like (the other one helped me greatly) but I love her style of teaching. Onwards and upwards now. 😊

Hopefully not too long, I’m thinking around a month, so hoping come January I’ll slowly be be able to bring Arlo back into work and I’ll be strong enough to ride once he’s ready!

That’s fab news you’ve got going with your girl as well. It feels great when you click with an instructor as well. I’ve found sometimes that I just don’t quite get on with some instructors that are highly recommended, they’re brilliant at what they do but I think clicking with a teaching style is most important! I hope you get out to your first prelim soon!!

Poor you.... Have you long to wait before you're back on board?

Fiona

Ive got two weeks no driving and have got a two week post op follow up appointment so I will ask then, I’m hoping it will only be around 4-6 weeks before I can crack on. New year, new start I’m hoping!

It is very frustrating having to take time out but at least you have chosen the best time of the year. Why not put a few good riding books on your Xmas list and start planning your comeback, I thoroughly recommend 101 schooling exercses edit by Jackie Bell. Sad person that I am, I read it in bed!
Having lost my lovely Bisto to colic a month ago I am getting to know my new horse and tbh I do wish it was the spring/summer time it has been very windy and wet and sadly some of my hacking buddies are also laid up so I have no-one to hack with (I hate hacking out on my own especially with a new horse). I am finding her little quirks and I suspect she is trying to find mine so I had an interesting time getting her to stand quietly whilst I mounted today. I have an injury which means my horse must stand where I put it until I am on board which is not what she has been doing. 25 mnutes in of politely asking her to stand where I'd put her (tell a gelding, ask a mare etc) I lost my rag and gave her a smack on her H/Qs when she moved and told her I was quite cross, she stood while I got on and we spent the next 15 minutes just getting on and off. I think she's a mare who is in the "give an inch category" so I think we both learned something today.
Try to enjoy your time of recuperation, read some good books, watch rubbish TV in the afternoon in front of the fire and just relish having a period of quiet in your life, we don't get that opportunity too often in life! Best wishes for a good recovery!

I was going to suggest getting some good reading material.

Re not riding, I get kind of used to it, I only miss it when I go and have a total blast on a borrowed steed! Not having one I do appreciate having the extra time to keep life in order, weekends feel a lot less frantic now.

Getting some horsey books to get stuck into is definitely a good idea. I suppose I shouldn’t be too worried this time of year, as you say it’s rather miserable and riding time is limited anyway. It feels like life is so hectic that you look forward to planned time off but when it’s forced it’s not quite so enjoyable, I’ve had four days doing nothing and I’m already losing the plot. Suppose it’s not a bad thing though, my lovely other half is looking after Arlo for me, even after nearly a year Arlo still isn’t keen on him, he’s quite wary of men and we don’t know his history, so it’s giving them a chance to ‘bond’ they even have scratches together now. I’m glad you’re working things out with your new mare, it’s definitely an interesting and challenging time learning eachothers quirks. I also need my horses to stand at the block so I taught Arlo to ‘park’ and whenever I’m stood on the block he knows under whatever circumstances to not move until asked. Took a long time as he quite a fear of being mounted, but he’s much more confident and I’ve been keeping up the mounting block training even in his time off. It definitely helps! 😊 all the best with your new mare, I look forward to updates x

I guess it’s nice to be able to ride every now and again without the time constraints of having one all the time. I was having a couple of flatwork lessons every couple of weeks before my op which kept me ticking over. As I said think I’m just feeling sorry for myself, it’s not too long to wait!

That's not too long to wait... Start making a list of venues, lessons and clinics you want to do in 2019....

No it’s not long just feels like a long time as haven’t ridden the boy since August! That’s a good idea. Super exciting as I’m getting a trailer at the end of January so will be able to plan outings a lot easier as never had own transport before! 😊

Oh definitely start your horsey outings diary then!

I’m not sure when he’ll be ready to get out and about properly but can pencil some dates in and look at my rota to fit in some fun days out like beach rides and xc schooling 😊 eek can’t wait to pick up my trailer at end of Jan, super exciting

What is it with horsey women?? Ants in our pants should be our middle name!

Horsey reading for sure! Box sets. YouTube.

I was off with a broken foot yonks ago and someone lent me “Royal Horse of Europe”. Changed my horsey life forever. Helped that I was a geeky sort that like history :D

Absolutely, we’re definitely not patient!! Thanks for the suggestions, will make a little list of books I can track down to keep me occupied.

watch fuego at the world equestrian games 2010 once a day, and pedro torres and oxidado working equitation twice a day, you`ll be nuts to get out there and back on a horse, and will get better very quick.

when not riding for whatever reason i use the time to tidy the house, get rid of rubbish and stuff i never use, tidy the yard, sit and think about what i have done with horses and how to do it better, make plans, eat well, and read books like `a year in provence` by peter mayle oh and look on h and h forum

Feel your pain. I broke my ankle landing on my feet after a fall out hunting on Saturday and I cannot believe how difficult everything is non weight bearing. Even making a cup of tea!!

Ahh I feel for you Michen! My original injury was a broken ankle following my horse falling while I was riding and crushing it. I was non weight bearing for 3 months so I feel your pain! Wishing you a super speedy recovery!

I'd had my new horse for maybe three weeks, and ridden her twice (because saddle fitters are impossible to get hold of), when she developed a hoof abscess. She's now sound, but I have a broken finger. Argh!

I'll hopefully get the splint off on Wednesday, so I'm expecting her to go lame again tomorrow.

Commiserations .....I have had up to 4 weeks doing little ,usually laid on a sofa , because of sciatica, and yes, the boredom was immense. I do draw a lot , so that helped, but when in pain reading sometimes seemed too difficult!
I did revisit box sets of
Flambards
Brideshead Revisited
Dallas
anything Jane Austen orperod drama where there might be horses appearing!
Or how about all Game of Thrones episodes? [eg if we have to stay up all night for birthing animals thats our go-to drama]
Also easy to read pony books, especially ones written in the 1930s eg Primrose Cummings Hope you recover soon!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I can do a bit more everyday. Very excited to get the all clear to ride as can’t wait to bring Arlo back into ridden work.
