The horse that was third in the 2.30 race at Cheltenham was being thrashed round the last lap of the race. In wet heavy going this is inexcusable.

Didn't see that race only caught the last one, was amazed that the meeting went ahead given the conditions, can only imagine there were a number of exhausted horses at the end of the day.

I'm suprised it still went ahead and that they didn't postpone. Some horses seemed to finish ok but in the 2:30 they did look exhausted. Going over the finish line they looked like they didn't have anything else to give despite the jockeys trying to push them. I didn't notice Kumbeshwar being thrashed but I was mainly focused on Pikamus as thought he was going to win that! Isn't there an 'acceptable' amount of times a jockey can use the whip?

If the horse was being "thrashed" then there will be a stewards enquiry.

However I have seen plenty of horse racing and have never seen a jockey "thrashing" a racehorse.

Thought you may be interested in this, it's from the BHA Stewards Room page on their website:

The Stewards held an enquiry into the use of the whip by Wayne Hutchinson, the rider of KUMBESHWAR, placed third, in the last three quarters of a mile. Having heard his evidence and viewed recordings of the race, they found him in breach of Schedule (B)6 Part 2 in that he had used his whip above the permitted level. The Stewards suspended Hutchinson for 7 days as follows: Wednesday 15 to Tuesday 21 January 2014 inclusive.

Should be a longer ban! The ground was awful and all the horse looked exhausted by the time they crossed the finish line. I think a few did get pulled up in that race when it was obvious double Ross and cedre bleu were the only two horses left in the race. The grey pikimus ran well to begin, but you could see they were all knackard Love watching my racing :) good week for hurricane fly and Annie power

Annie Power is amazing, great to see a chestnut mare and she makes everything look easy....impossible to tell so far as to how good she is as no horse has yet to give her a race. The ground didn't seem to make any difference either.

Annie power is undoubtdly smart but where would you race her. Champion Hurdle against Hurricane Fly, My Tent or Yours or The New One. Mares Hurdle she will come up against Quevega. Or the World Hurdle where she will face the great BIG Buck's. Mind you it's a nice problem to have!

Can't see Mullins wanting her to race against Hurricane Fly or Quevega so I suppose it will have to be the simple task of beating Big Bucks !

Its all fine and well saying take on Big Bucks in the World Hurdle but will she stay? Most of her races have been at 2miles, only recently stepping up to 2 1/2miles

I am disgusted at Wayne Hutchinson, I have always liked him a a jockey (prefer him to Choc Thornton, tbh). Not any more!
Most jockeys I thought rode very sensibly and if their mount was failing they were riding out with hands and heels a lot more than usual.
I do like Annie Power but cannot support her as I loathe her owner. She is a big girl and it would be great to see her following Dawn Run and taking on the top boys.

Thankyou for updating this - Personally I'm glad to see that riding that appears to be cruel or excessive has produced exactly this result. A weeks ban is a lot of loss of earnings and gives a pretty strong message that this behaviour will not be tolerated. So a good news story in some ways (as well as confirmation that the OPs feelings were shared by those who are there to protect the horses).
